Gary March to be on SEN [Next.7.20am]

I dont think March has ever said that Finals is the criteria.

To the contrary, in his radio interview last year which has been very heavily reported on regarding the differing ratings of the clubs effort in 2008, he clearly said that the only criteria was the development of the list (and coaches) and the decision would be made by JUNE.

That means that finals are NOT a factor, regardless of what the press want to set up for an ongoing debate about our weekly results this year.

He hasn't said finals are a necessity exactly but you can read between the lines that it's still going to play a significant part in any reappointment decision along with the junior development aspect.

If we haven't made the eight by the end of 2009, that might be a different thing," March said.

"But we've also got a lot of expectations, and I think all of us around the club are expecting us to push to the finals next year."

I have also heard Wallace say in a presser that he knows he has to make the finals to keep his job.

Welcome aboard Betty. A lovely person. Did Gary give any indication of why Betty has signed up? Is she a Richmond supporter? Has she been a member before?
Cousins

*Wont be discussing Terry,s contract at all this year.Meeting at the end of the year layed it all out for Terry to whats req. for next year[the club doesnt need the distraction]

not sure this is a good thing... there are 7 coaches out of contract this year and we will need to get in early if terry's time is up. surely a decsion could and should be made by round 15?

why? this will be his last club as head coach, there will be no more chances after this, so no pressure on us to rush a signature until we want it.

I read Ian's comments differently.  I thought, considering he mentioned "if Terry's time is up", he was coming from the angle of picking the eyes out of the coaches coming out of contract rather than re-signing Terry.  Funny how we can read a different meaning into the same thing.

I think it would be a fair assumption to link the two here. If we don't make finals this year then its a pretty fair assumption that we wont have seen to much development of anybody during 2009, barring significant injury issues of course.

The scene is set.

But how bizarre is it that here we are, at a time of year, when you are lucky to find any media print on intra club scratch matches, and here we are on the back page of every major Melbourne newspaper, every internet news site and all the News programs complete with footage, photo galleries, and running commentaries. I think even the most optimistice supporters have underestimated just what effect the Cousins factor would have on the club. The sponsors must be loving it. Luxbet have really timed their announcement well and getting maximum coverage of the deal at the moment aren't they.

All good I say. Bring on the Carlscum. :gotigers :gotigers

I agree Gus. A reasonable assumption but I wouldn't like to think Gary specifically linked Terry's future publicly to a finals appearance. It would restrict options and the media would be all over it like a rash if we made the first week of finals for example but still replaced Terry. The less said the better imo.

Or March is just trying very hard to keep Terry's contract out of the media during the season. Stating point blank that it will only be discussed at the end of the season may remove some speculation.

I take this as a very positive sign. One, March knows his stuff. Two, it smacks of confidence to me. I think the powerbrokers at the club are expecting big things this season, from the Pres to the coach.

If we're travelling well Terry's contract will hardly raise a murmur in the media. If we're struggling they'll have a feeding frenzy with their speculation about his future. That, unfortunately, is the nature of the beast.
