PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

I was reading the 1996 Tiger Files publication and there's an article about Gas after his first season. Will type it out for prosperity's sake but my reason for this post is to ask if anyone remembers what Gas's price tag and contract was that caused so much controversy at the time?  It's proved to be a bargain whatever it was.

Round 22 Tiger of the Week
Penny Hanson

It hadn't been an easy first season with the Tigers for Darren Gaspar.  A lot of responsibility was loaded off onto his shoulders.
With Scott Turner gone from the side with a knee injury, Gaspar was given some of the toughest assigments on the field.
He lined up against some of the most formidable forwards in the business.  Carey, Ablett and Locket to name a few.  I think it's safe to say this young cub has more than earned his stripes and associated pots of gold.
Gaspar was originally recruited from Sydney in the 1993 draft.  He played 21 games with the Swans before Richmond presented him with money he couldn't refuse.  It's been money well spent.
Football psychology has undergone significant changes but player attitudes govern on field success.  The Richmond management wisely tested the player reaction to the pricetag that had to be paid to secure the likeable young Swan.  Money was not the issue.  They voted for the aquisition of Darren Gaspar.  Gave him recognition by dubbing him 'The Ghost' and he simply became one of them.
He has been moved around the field quite a bit this season but proved most effective in the backline.  He stood up to be counted when the Tigers lost champion full-back Scott Turner.
Gaspar is quick at the ball and his disposal is effective.  He is a focussed and determined player who never loses sight of his objective.  He provides assistance where required and is relentless in pursuit.  He has been one of the Tiger's most hardworking players.  Walls named him as one of the select group of players who carried the team during the season.
