Maybe pedantic about spelling and grammar Andy but like some teachers it's easy to choose the target.  Single out some posters and conveniently turn a blind eye to others.  As I've said before people have left this site because of their poor grammar being highlighted and I think that's really sad. I believe if a teacher really did care they'd talk to a student in private rather than make a spectacle of them in front of the class.

You had gaspar (with an er) blaisee.  I've added it to the censored words to change to Gaspar to prevent the error becoming a public criticism and discussion as has tended to happen in the past.

It is a sad situation when this has to occur.

Wayne Carey is on record as saying Gas is the best backman he's played on. That's a pretty decent wrap.
Gaspar was a very good backman but he's finished now.

Moore, Jackson, Hall and Knobel certainly.

Are they the only 4 you can come up with. Poor effort. :hihi

What about ranking the list I gave ? That would help our assessment of your thoughts.

I'm truly touched at your interest in my thoughts, but what about yours ?

Besides Notwortha and Subpar, who's on your "not up to it" list ?

Ohhh I'm deeply overwhelmed by your interest in my thoughts, I'll give you a kiss :-*.................. :hihi (geez you're strange sometimes)

I'd say that these players should be retired, delisted or traded at end of 2007:-

Gaspar
Knobel
Pettifer
P Bowden
Jackson
Krakouer
Tivendale
McGuane
Moore

....and these should be retired, delisted or traded at end of 2008:-
Hall
Howat
Johnson
Richo
Meyer
Pattison
Hartigan
Coughlan (if still injured)

Re: THE GAS

Wonder when Carey would have said that.....I vividly remember Carey cutting Gaspar to ribbons in the last quarter of Round 22 1996 when we looked like winning to make the finals, enter Carey and it was game over....no wonder he thought Gaspar was the best backman to play on....

Re: THE GAS

when is the club gonna get serious. playing *smile*, what a joke. we were complaining about him in 04 and hes still around. We expect to win with the likes of these sorts of players, yeah right!!! (johno-wat an inspirational captain, richo-unfortunately time to get new blood into fwd line and look to the future mate, pettifer- too soft for footy-try netball). keep dreamin richmond. us supporters will suffer cause of your inept, incapable management of the team. GET SERIOUS and so will the supporters. stop playing us as fools, making us watch crap players, and crap game plans. rather watch coburg and the future young boys.

Hey Scoop.

I've been working in my laboratory the last few weeks.I've developed these special sunglasses.Whenever Krakour and Gaspar come into my line of sight said players get pixelated out, like the soft porn rude bits.

It's the only way I can watch Richmond games and stay sane.

I'm thinking about marketing them and they will soon be available on the Drofder.com website for purchase.

Gaspar trivia: some will see fault in this, but he's played more matches than any other current player without being reported.

Its hard to belt anyone properly being spreadeagled on the turf as their running into goal

Chump Change

I know that Gaspar, for whatever reason causes, a lot of debate.

He was recruited from another club over ten years ago. Rightly or wrongly. Was twice named AA subsequently and is IMO almost certainly in his last year on the list. The issue is almost over.

Last year, Wallet commissioned Miller to find him a key defender. Miller targeted and secured Graham Polak for a downgrade of selection #8 in a touted super-draft and chump change. Subsequently the coach has not seen fit to play him in defence.

The Gaspar issue morphed into the Polak issue weeks/months ago and it aint going away. Call it what you will. I call it a chump change.

That's a very good point.

Polak is going well, and I expected that he'd end up going forward a fair bit, but why (as Tim Watson was asking the other day) has Wallace not been playing him down back more ? Wasnt he recruited to fill one of the voids in the backline ? Ok, he's had to pinch hit in the ruck a bit, but he hardly seems to have played down back at all.

Valid but like I posted on the Polak thread, was there a match up for himdown down back. Besides Darcy, who Gaspar should have been on fromthe get go, who does Polak go to down back. I think Friday nite is a OK night for him.

Really if Gaspar takes the first monster and there is not a suitable matchup I have no problem with Polak going forward. He should have went to Rocca much earlier v the Pies and released Bowden. This week I see him going to Hansen at CHB or Staker.

True, but imo its not just matching up on a specific player though SCOOP, its being that mainstay we desperately need across half back and havent had for years.

Not always did Leppitsch have a pure match-up when he was sent to the backline under Matthews. But he was always down there, often acting as a plug in the hole when he didn’t have that proper match up, using pretty good foot skills to deliver off the half back line as well. He just really stiffened up everything down back. Essendon have done the same this year with Michael, McPhee and Ryder all playing big, strong, roles down back. We need to start doing the same because if we can put enough pressure on through the midfield such that the ball comes in a bit slower and higher, having that sort of big man strength down back makes it almost impossible for an opposition forward line to score heavily against you.

As an individual, I actually reckon Polak is better suited on the forward line and pinch hitting in the ruck – as he’s doing now - but we have such a chronically poor backline at the moment with little strength and poor delivery coming off it, that’s its almost encumbent upon us to try and fit him in there somehow. Maybe that will happen when Kingsley gets in the side and plays up front.

Agree with all of this.

Some of the younger talls on the list need to make these tall defensive roles their own. Reivoldt, Schulz, Hughes, McGuane, Pattison, Thursfield, I don't care which ones. There are opportunities to at least despatch Gaspar to the retirement village and Joel Bowden to the relative calm of playing loose across half-back.

These guys could make careers for themselves by helping to solve a chronic problem. Do they even understand this? Most of them seem to all want to play forward.

Its interesting talking about backlines, defensive pressure, and such.

Where many sports are concerned, particularly overseas, the first thing a new coach of a perennially struggling club tries to do is to genuinely improve the defensive aspects of their team i.e. as a first step, narrow the margin and get the team into a regular position of at least being a chance to win.

Wallace has done the exact opposite. He came to the club talking of kicking 16 goals a game, being more attacking, making our play more exciting etc. etc. Certainly we seem capable of kicking more goals nowadays, so maybe we’ve improved in this area.

But has Wallace blindsided himself a tad on account of the frustration we all had with Frawley’s negative game plan over the years ? That is, instead of trying to appease us with a more aesthetically satisfying style of play, should he have been focusing a bit more on our defensive elements first ?

To me, whilst there have been improvements in certain areas of our on-field performance, one aspect that has not improved is our defensive play and our ability to put on… and keep on…defensive pressure right around the ground. Neither do we appear to have strengthened or developed a really hard core “back 6” that we can put a fair level of faith in from week to week.

Certainly the “against” column in the ladders of the last few years and our associated percentages seem to indicate that the defensive aspect of our game is still a huge problem for us.

Agree again.

And it is surprising, given his strategies at the Bulldogs. One of his first moves there was to push Chris Grant down to CHB and start to build his defence around him. Then he added Danny Southern, Kretiuk and Croft as strong-willed defenders to go with the softer but more creative Craig Ellis. He then rounded the defence out with hard runners like Brad Johnson, Rohan Smith and Kolyniuk.

That soon became a flexible back line for all comers.

You can see the theory with his encouragement of Raines and Deledio and he has a solid, flexible building block in JBowden but the rest has been a disappointing result.

I suspect that Wallace's biggest failing is that his experience with Grant and Darcy has made him too fussy with taller players. He keeps looking for players who are similar to build his team around and it blindsides him to other options that could be just as effective. I'm sure that thinking of Darcy influenced him to choose Pattison ahead of Wood. His selected talls, like McGuane, Limbach, Thursfield and even Reivoldt are all Grant-clones. Even Hughes, who landed in their lap, is built along similar lines.
