Does anyone know where I might find details of the Geelong list of 2004? Just by way of comparison. If the Richmond team of 08 is the one that is going to hatch, apparently, into a premiership challenging side in 2011, then it'd be interesting to see what shape the Cats were in in 04, at the same stage in their development.

Cheers, Broady.

They finished 4th that year.

Cheers Dyer and Rosy. I don't expect it'll paint much of a positive picture, but it'll be something to do nonetheless lol.

Carn the Tiges!

People like to make comparisons with Geelong and how Thompson kept his job. He did because he was making the finals and his list did show promise. This is as big a year as it will get for Wallace, he hasnt made the eight yet. The cats made the 8 a couple of times uner Thompson, before winning it last year.

If those stats are correct TW has turned over 2/3 of 'players used' in 2004 in three years.

yep made the prelim and should of made another in 05 aswell although most people think they just came from nowhere to win it last year which isnt true

lol. Too true mario brothers.
Turning over the list isn't TWs job anyway.
His is to get the most out of those that are there.
Good point ToO.Also wonder if we have the right development type coaches as other clubs seem to develop youngsters alot better than us.

Amen to that one! What RFC receives and what it achieves seems to be two different things..................

Whose job is it then? Clearly his job entails getting rid of those he thinks are not up to it. Which at 66% in three years is pretty decent. Seems the problems occur when he starts specifically identifying replacements (re: Sanchez, P Bowden, Graham) or Miller throws in his short cuts (Polak) rather than letting the under resourced recruiters do their jobs.

Thompson took over as coach of Geelong for the commencement of the 2000 season. He inherited a list formulated during a very successful period for the GFC, and although they had been absent from finals footy for the previous two seasons, they had enough aging talent on the list to again make the grade under the new coach...(Ayres is so cr@p :hihi!).

Wallace's first year was nothing short of remarkable......he had the reigning wooden spooners, the perennial cellar dwellers during the latter part of Frawleys tenure at 7 & 2 and playing a brand of football no one had thought possible. Brown's injury was untimely and unfortunate, and I have no doubt it cost us a final's berth :'(.

Thompson 2001, 2002 & 2003....12th, 9th & 12th but importantly added class to the what was already a developing/emerging list. Credit where credit is due....Geelong drafted particularly well during that period!

Wallace 2006 & 2007....9th & 16th and similarly (but finally at Richmond) adding class through the draft.

Points of difference:

Thompson inherited a developing list in 2000, Wallace inherited an aging train wreck ::)
Wallace has one more year of development (08) if we want to make an apples for apples assesment of the two coaches.

I can't help but think our performaces of 07 are largely consequent to crap trading during 01, 02 & 03 (notwithstanding injuries & confidence). This period is like a black hole, we operated with zero foresight......and it is little wonder we have this vacuum of talent which I sincerely believe Wallace has, at the very least, tried to address during his tenure thus far.

I am prepared to cut Wallace some slack......, I think GM is the one with blood on his hands and he needs to be made accountable for his role in the pre-Wallace years.

yep only 1 new player from 2006 selwood made a significant contribution in 2007. so they did it maimly with players who missed finals in 2006. what most people forget is they lost two very closefinals in 04 and 05 i would go so far as to say they were unlucky in both one was a preliminary i think.
when thompson missed finals in 06 of course peple were going to ask questions about him.most people could see they had a very good list.

Nice thought, but forget about comparing ANY geelong list with ours.

Really I Can't stand the cats, but until we improve OUR BASIC SKILLS like KICKING and PASSING there is no need to compare.

The Cat's did have a much better core of senior players than us, and they have NAILED the draft, year after year by inproving their list with picks and trades, their list has been put together since about 1999 or so if you go back and see the history.
