Sorry rosy, I think the real answer is they thought it would help their eyesight, or so a bloke on a deep sea fishing trip once told me anyway.

Easier to wear your gold than carry it in a wallet or man-bag (which is difficult to carry about a galleon on the high seas with a British Frigate hot on your heels).

twas the 20th, French were chopping heads still into the 70's (definitely) or 80's (I believe).
