It's not good sportsmanship to over rule the umpires.
If they say not out, it's not out, ha.
Was he a good sportsman walking, or didn't he see the umpie say not out?

Aint it funny how this three year old thread is still relevant.

Gilly Walks. Punter Talks then Baulks.

Why the hell should he walk when he wasnt obviously out..... ::)

If you make the decision to play a certain way then you should maintain that position.

Punter is starting to look Petty, especially after his Tantrum at the AB Medal

Agreed you dont walk when you know deadset u are not out.
Seems the ol gentlemans agreement in cricket when a batsmen would look to the fielder for honest confirmation of the catch, and walk taking the fieldsmans word for it are gone.
Not a surprise really with all of the money sponsorship ect involved nowadays.
If Ponting has big ideas on on and off field behaviour he can start with his own team. The Aussies have fast become a gaggle of petulant hard done by little boys.

Ponting's given up asking opposing captains to accept the fielders word.So why should he walk?
He shoudln't wlak but his proposed deal with other captains was silly.Would have cause too many problems.

The best way to clear this all up would be to make it a rule that unless the umpire raises the finger the batsman doesn't walk. Yes, occasionally a player will get lucky and get given a life, but it all evens out because they'll get other decisions that they didn't deserve. Considering that the player who claimed the Ponting catch later apologised to Punter for claiming a catch that he hadn't taken cleanly Ricky made the correct decision. On that I'm yet to hear Tony Greig apologise to Ponting over his disgraceful lobbying for that catch to be ruled legal. And what was with 3 Sri Lankanks trying to convince the umpire to rule Ponting out? If that had been Australia the whole team would have been fined for dissent.

Greigs commentary was disgraceful. It wasn't a catch and there's every chance Punter could see it wasn't. Why the hell should he walk?
Was the "agreement " Punter had tried to have accepted in the past actually agreed to in this series anyway?

I don't recall Grieg was a great one for walking - in fact he was a big believer of gamesmanship.

I'll take it a bit further TGN, Greig is a disgrace! He, along with the rest of the media, get into the Aussie crowds for suspected racist barracking (if any of that is proved it's disgusting and those doing it are not true supporters of any sport), yet Greig goes on air positively rubbing his hands with glee about the sort of abuse that the Australian team are likely to receive from the South African crowds during the forthcoming tour. Please Eddie, do us all a favour and sack this clown!

righto!Im buying into this!
first, let me say ive been following the cricket since the heady days of tiger flags and when richmond at one stage had a MONOPOLY on the legends...or so it seemed......
All this absolute crap about aussie crowds being racially abusive....GIVE ME A BREAK!ill tell ya s something for free.....for all the allegations of racial slurs and racial crowds in Australia ove r the years.....do ya ever hear the AUSSIES WHINGEING ABOUT THIS HAPPENING IN OTHER COUNTRIES?EVER?
The answer is no....because anyone that does their home work will realise that the aussies realise that this goes with the territory.....you always get mega-partisan crowds backing their country by any ways and means...on the scale of world wide supporter extremes....Aussie crowds are the most moderate.
Now before you flamin foreign people start swingin into me........we dont get SOCCER RIOTS IN THE COUNTRY,and if we do,its incited by ethnic groups.not your hard-core aussies....the Aussies learnt from the floggings they got off the poms and especially the west indies that the only way to get on terms with em was to get not only as good, but better than em....
So...you get a few ferals giving Murali and the south Africans a gobful....this is in the minority.....
i learnt a long time ago that the best way to beat not only opposition teams, but hecklers...is on the scoreboard.......
Come on south Africa and especially Murali............admit it....ya werent good enuff to beat the aussies.....
as simple as that...
Dont hide your sporting inadequacies behind acussing the Australian sporting public of being racist......and grow up.....and get with the real world......HMPH....... >:(

He's way past his use by date isn't he (some would say he was "off" from the start!). I made the same observation about his S.A comments. All this crap about giving it to the Aussies, apparently it's ok when other crowds go hard.

The Aussies aren't perfect no doubt, but I get a bit jack of the assertions made by donkey's like Greig that they are on their own.

Aussies players are criticised for gamesmanship but Griegy thought Duncan Fletcher routinely bringing on specialist fielders to rest bowlers at strategic times was good cricket. Sri Lanka play the race card to ensure Murali can keep throwing and that's ok too.

Aussie crowds are supposedly a disgrace yet the bollocking handed out at Birmingham which some English commentators even raised an eye at was all good fun it seems. (Warney's been around and doesn't mind taking a bit but even he was shocked.) There have been incidents of abuse in South Africa in the past (when their pathetic crowds bother turning up to test cricket) from the country who provided the worlds first rugby referee assault. Greig rarely if ever brings any sort of even handed discussion into the frame.

(It seems to be fashionable to knock Aussie cricketers and while there are good reasons for doing so from time to time they do seem to be judged by a different standard, I guess because they win so much. And it happens just as much in Australia.)

Grieg forgets he's there to commentate not barrack. The contrast between him and Benaud is clear - one calls the game objectively, the other flaunts his biases and shoulder chips.

Yeah we have whinged a bit sorry Nitro.
When England were out here last time we got upsetwith Barmy Army calling Lee for no balling as if he was chucking.
We have also not been happy with crowds in West Indies, South Africa and England in the 5-10 years as well. This has probably been justifed but so have South Africa against us.
What I heard on boxing day was a disgrace and would make me consider taking a family to the cricket again. Our crowd behaviour is at an all time low as it is people going to the cricket with no interest in cricket just beer, blondes and beach balls and after lunch the abuse and language is shocking.

With Kerry Packer passed on, this may now actually become a possibility. While Packer, was still alive, Greig was around for the longest haul! Packer believed he owed Grieg for everything he did to get WSC happening & getting players like himself & his mates to get involved.

fair call MK33...
My point is that you are ALWAYS gonna get yer loudmouthed boozed up feral nobrained fans WHERE-EVER ya go in this big wide world.......and I learnt a long time ago...the bset way to deal with em is toIGNORE EM r take it out on the scoreboard......Ive said before.......dont feed their egos by responding or getting outwardly upset.......
and........south Africa and Murali have had a HISTORY of whinging about sledging and abuse from fans......justified or not.....here,s a new slant on the debate...
I rember being at the "g"in the late 70,s (as a young tacker of course)watching a test match between Pakistan and the Aussies...It was one of them days that the Aussies could hardly BUY a wicket.....this is when Lillee waz playin ya know......and I can remember the outer near bay 13 really GIVING IT to Lillee...just relentlessly.......all day, cause he never took a wicket.......Thats when as a nine year old I wondered where it was all headed as far as being patrotic waz concerned....happy to report that back to back flags to the Tigers restored my faith in loyalty and stickin up for your own team no matter what!Cheers! ;D

OK You make Good Points about Tony Greig and being past his use by date. Who is the replacement?

Do we need one? If you want someone to stir up a bit of controversy and maybe give you a laugh while he's at it, bring on Sam Newman's understudy James Brayshaw.

It was well known that he was close to one K Packer before his death. Might explain why he has been kept on for sooooooooooo long. Hopefully James might see the light and give this guy the flick asap.
