I too heard the GM interview last week and I made a few notes ( 1st chance I have had to log on here at PRE so sorry if I am if going over old ground )
Just a few points
- I can't believe people here ar PRE accuse GM of spin doctoring. I reckon GM is one of the most upfront and honest people I have ever heard speak in the game. I hang on every word he says.
- The main point to prove about GM honesty is what he hopes for 2008-9. GM said he would be disappointed if we weren't pushing for a top 4 position. That was top 4 people, not just playing finals. Personally I think that is putting your reputation on the line and being about as honest as you can be. By saying publically that 2007 is another building year and that 2008-9 we hope to be competeing for a top 4 place is a big statement and a high expectation, and I would of thought an expectation all supporters hope comes true. So forget next year and making the finals, focus long term and what we are really wanting to achieve. GM and co are focusing on building a team that can be a premiership chance, not just a top 8 chance.
- The main point GM was making about top 8 not being the focus next year is that we still need to get games into young players. GM said this a few times and made it clear that it takes 5-6 years in the modern era to build a successful team, and that 2007 will be our 3rd year of building, so building is the focus, not where we finish on the ladder. That is not to say that we don't still hope to play in finals of course. Then in 2008-9 while Richo, Bowden etc are still around, hopefully we will have a good mix to pish for top 4. Then after that, he expects us to level off a bit when the experienced player move on, before the kids of today beome the new leaders. He even mentioned from about 2011 - 2018 that we should be a consistantly successful club. That is the kind of longer term planning I want to hear and what we have lacked in the past.
- I though it was also funny to note GM comparisons to building today to how it was 10 plus years ago. He made the point that there are 16 well run clubs these days, where as years ago there were the rich clubs, and about 5 clubs didn't know what they were doing, and building was certainly easier.
So in a nut shell
1. It takes 5-6 years to build something from scratch.
2. Making $1m this year good, but we are still paying from mistakes from the past.
3. Finals 2007 may be too high an expectation. Our younger players still need to get games into them.
4. 2008-9 he would be disappointed if we weren't pushing top 4.
GM to me tells it like it is. He has heaps of experience. And doesn't care what you or I think, he knows what to do to build our club into a power club of the future and he is doing it. He is not short term focused, he is focused on Richmond being a regular finals team for 10 years. And personnally that is what I want. Stuff finishing 8th next year, I want to be top 4 material in 2 or 3 years, and after that, see Richmond make the finals most years for the next 10 years. Anyone who questions GM or doubts him, well that is your choice. But I believe in 20 years GM will be the name that is responsible for the good times our club will soon enjoy.
Cheers
