PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

This is part 2 of my analysis of the club and players.

Having worked in various fields and industries , being part of introducing ideas and having programs implemented i guess i have various ideas that can be implemented in the sporting arena.

In essence really there is no difference as the Richmond Football Club is a business, a business in making a profit, a business with shareholders(being us the supporters ) who pay memberships which pays the salaries of the players. As shareholders we want a return for our investment, i.e better on field performances, playing finals and ultimately a premiership.

GOAL SETTING- S.M.A.R.T

With Goal setting as we all know they have to be Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic and Time Managed.

S=Specific
--------------------
How this could work in relation to the club is similar to frank assessment that we heard about Geelong doing the week before they played us at Telstra and smashed us by over 150 pts. The " Gaspergate".

Put in place a a tool which by the players appraise each other after every game. Each player is asked to rate a players performance out of 10. 1 being the lower end of the scale(didnt meet the criteria set by the players) , 5 (met some of the criteria set) and 10 (met all the criteria set by the playing group).

This would clearly set boundaries of what is required by all players.

M=Measurable
--------------------------

These need to be measurable. You would need to establish criteria for measuring progress towards the attainment of each goal you set with each player. When you measure your progress, it enables the player to stay on track. What this does is two fold. Achieving goals gives the player a sense of achievemnet that could spur the player to be consistant week in week out. These should be set during pre season training, evaluated and set again for the season proper.

A=Attainable
-------------------

When you identify the goals that are specific to each player, he , with the help of his peers and support staff,can begin to figure out ways you can make them come true. You develop the attitudes, abilities, and skills to reach them.

A player has to believe that he can attain almost any goal which is set when you plan your steps wisely and establish a time frame that allows you to carry out those steps. Goals that may have seemed far away and out of reach eventually move closer and become attainable, not because your goals shrink, but because you grow and expand to match them. When a player lists his goals he will build his own self-image. Confidence as we know is something that is truly lacking at the club at the moment amongst the playing group. This enables the player to also develop good traits.

R=Realistic
---------------------

To be realistic, a goal must represent an objective toward which all players are willing and able to work. The player is the one who can decide just how high his goal should be. It has to represent progress. In this area a player should set high goals. The reason for this is that there are times this may be easier to reach than a low one because a low goal , there is not much motivation there. When a player achieves these goals set the feeling this would give is important to the player , the playing group, supporters and the club.

A player has to believe in this process. One of the ways to know if his goal is realistic is to look at his junior days before being drafted to the club to see if he accomplished anything similar.

T=Time Managed
-----------------------------

A goal should be set with a time frame. With no time frame tied to it there's no sense of urgency. As said previously we can use this model in relation to setting what goals the player wants to accomplish at various stages in this area. We can look at what the player wants to achieve in cycles. For example pre season training, pre season competition, practice games and season proper.But all these have to be set within a timeframe.

For example, the areas to look at might be to get fitter (to play a midfield role), put on some weight( so you not easily pushed off the ball), you could also note here muscle mass as well. So you get an idea.

NON-NEGOTIABLE
-------------------------------------

This is something we have to get back too. It is an area that once we set this in concrete within the playing group you will be amazed at what confidence this will build.

What i consider as non-negotiables are these:

Tackling = The minimum excepted would be each player has to lay a tackle. No player to come off the ground having not done so. The minimum tackle count 60 +

Sheperding= To block, to harass, to look after a team mate who has the ball.

Gut running= Most of the players should take a leaf out of Cousin's book and also how hard Richo works. Too many of our players are lazy footballers.

Putting your body on the line= Players who sherk the issue , back off from this situation is immediately benched.

Voice= This is an area that the club has been lacking in. We have recruited some players who are extroverts but we have too many who are introverts and this shows on the field. We need this more to happen out on the field as too many players are caught, run down and not told when they are in the clear to take the game on or when to dispose of the ball.

Following instructions= Players who dont follow instructions and are shelfish, appear to be playing for themselves are immediately benched. Continue offenders will be dropped.

REWARD & RECOGNITION
-----------------------------------------

This is something that needs to be addressed. Many players appear to be the coaches favourites. This needs to be eliminated. Players need to be recognised for their good performances in the Coburg side and rewarded by playing seniors. We need to find out by seasons end who will be part of the club moving forward.

All these principles if you like to call them , ultimately will come from the playing group. They decide , encourage, access, provide feedback for each other's games. Positive feedback needs to be given but areas such as the non-negotiables are as the word says, non-negotiable. These are team rules which should be set in stone.They should be on each players locker. They should be at each changeroom before a game. Failure to adhere to these team rules and the player is reprimanded(meaning he is told in front of his peers that failure to do this next round will result in being dropped to the reserves.

These are some ideas. In all businesses alot of these principles are used. Its to build morale, team spirit, a sense of belonging and a direction.
