Has anyone noticed from the weekend that the bulk of the goalkickers in teams were not key tall forwards but were either long kicking midfielders or crumbers.
The first 10 listed are:
1. LeCras 6 - Med Fwd
2. Betts 5 - Crumber
3. Franklin 5 - Tall Fwd
4. Hahn 5 - Midfielder
5. Hooper 4 - Midfielder / Crumber
6. Morton 4 - Medium Fwd / Crumber
7. Motlop 4 - Medium Fwd
8. Roughead 4 - Tall Fwd
9. Bradshaw 3 - Tall Fwd
10. Brown 3 - Tall Fwd
So, as you can see, apart from Franklin, regular tall fwds don't kick in till #8.
Also that those 4 Tall fwds listed are confined to two teams, Hawthorn & Brisbane, whose game plans are centred to their Tall fwds.
The next 10:
11. Eagleton 3 - Crumber
12. Gilbee 3 - Midfielder
13. Griffen 3 - Midfielder
14. Hansen 3 - Tall Fwd
15. MacIntosh 3 - Tall fwd
16. Milne 3 - Crumber
17. Peake 3 - Med Fwd
18. Robinson 3 - Midfielder
19. Stevens 3 - Tall Fwd
20. Waite 3 - Tall Fwd
Again, the majority of goalkickers come from Midfielders / Crumbers.
Is the game changing dramatically and we, at Tigerland, are a bit slow in picking this up?
Instead of packing our forward half with tall key forwards, should we merely be putting 1 or 2 up there as a target, then packing genuine shorter forwards / crumbers around them, also instructing our midfield to have a shot unless there is a forward absolutely in the clear in the RIGHT position to have an accurate shot.
Raises the question,
Are our midfielders capable of kicking long & accurate goals from 40+ metres out?
Food for thought anyway.
Interesting to see how others interpret the other games over round 1 and how other teams have adapted to overcoming opposition defences.
