Goalkicking mids?

Simple explanation as to why the above mentioned players can't kick a goal IMO.

Cogs, Tuck & Sugar are all too slow.  They are unable to break the lines with the necessary pace needed to give themselves enough space to steady and kick goals.

This is why TW has drafted pace over the last 2 years as I'm sure he identified this lack of pace. Eg, Lids, Tambling, Meyer, JON - all these guys will be groomed as midfielders who can break the lines and kick goals through sheer pace.

With Lids being played all over the place and IMO lacking some confidence, he has been unable to be a goal kicking midfielder.  Tambling will be splitting the sticks on a regular basis in the near future, but needs the strong bodies of Tuck, Cogs, and the in and under of Foley, etc. to give him supply.

Foley is another who is deceptively quick (quickest player at the club over 20m apparantly) and can burst through and deliver - seems to be a very unselfish player however who always looks to hit a leading target.

Of the current players and our current structure, only Hyde and to a lesser extent Tivendale seem to be the players who can deliver with goals ATM.

Great summary. Spot on.

We will never be a top liner unlees we get more goals out of our mids.

Very, very important to have goalkicking mids, particularly in the modern game, because it makes it difficult for the opposition to guess where the goals are going to come from.

Let's not get carried away.....his lack of speed is actually a concern.

Sorry RU, got to go with Newman- very quick first 5 - 10,  dont know why you think his speed is a worry.  Look at his work in the middle and note how he either gets the pill first or is able to get to the player with the ball to put pressure on.  Foley, and his speed, is definitely not a worry more a godsend.

By the way just for RU Foley is amongst the top few at Richmond for vertical leap as well ;)

Thanks Lamby but i'll go with what my eyes tell me. Winning the ball at stoppages requires a quick mind and hands....not necessarily legs! I've also never yet seen him move away from an opponent with a ball in his hand during a game.

My comments on Foley's speed over the first 20m came from an interview with Joel Bowden who stated it as a fact.

Obviously players are timed over certain distances and Foley is obviously right up there at our club. Watch a replay of last weeks game and you will see on 2 occassions where axel uses his pace out of packs - he will do this more often with more game time.....I am a fan.

Yeah well.....for a player who is just bursting with pace its a wonder they didn't play him at subi! ;)

Look...i admire young Nathan for his inside ability and think he has the potential to be a handy player but i don't think we will ever see him breaking the lines.

In his short AFL carreer Foley gets a disposal every 4 minutes or so. That makes him a 25 - 30 possession type player, And he uses it better than Tucks, Cogs or Johnson. And he makes a zillion tackles and spoils and harrasses cleverly. And he has very good speed over 10 - 20 metres. And he has a great vertical leap, and he can snap a nice goal........

and I hear he used to roost a football over a silo down at Camperdown

Just kidding about the last one :hihi

I think Danny Meyer averaged something like 2 goals a game during his junior career so he should be able to develop into a 30 something a season goalkicker in time.
