i just saw ross lyon being interviewed on fox sports. he was asked "which player has improved the most st st kilda?" lyon said it's exciting to see kids and rookies make the grade (jones, geary, gilbert, etc), but the hardest thing to do is for players like ball, del santo, montagna, etc to take that extra step. basically he's saying its bloody hard to go from being a good player to an elite footballer

it's a good point to make. we have players in who are in a similar scenario... lids and foley are the first 2 that come to mind. what do they need to do to take that next step?

i think the thing that we don't see with lids/foley is the consistency throughout the match and from week to week.

i also think it's probably easier to be classified elite when you've got the right players around you and I think this is where lids is impacted. if your teammates run to the right spots, block and shepherd, then the very good player can go to the elite level.

foley on the other hand has the added problem of not quite elite disposal, which i fear will hold him back from being at the elite level, although we will see glimpses of it, so the debate will be one that goes on.

cotchin needs to first show that he can play a full season, then we can worry about whether he'll be very good or elite!
