Going to the Footy in 2008

dunno how i missed this thread yesterday.. but i am a loser and go to the footy by myself if i cant drag my friends along! so if ya see me standing / sitting by myself say hi! :help hahah

I plan my trips back to Australia, which has been about every 2 years for 10 years, around football. Never bother about Xmas, anyone's birthdays, nothing. Just make sure I am in Melbourne for usually a night game at the G. Last game I saw live was the JON point game against Ess, with Polo's 3 goals, 2005. Awful match. Horrid standard. Loved it. My Japanese wife has been to 3 games at the G, we have won each time. She was shocked by the prices these days for a beer and what not. Tokyo Dome better value than AFL nowadays. She kind of pays attention for my sake when I am cursing the computer screen but will never be hardcore. This year I will bring my first born along with. Round 1 or 3 look the goods but I have to work in the MLB season opener with the Sox at the Tokyo Dome.

"Scuse me mate, would you and the missus mind lookin' after me daughter while I grab a beer?"

Gold. Absolute gold. Coming from a culture of soccer hooliganism, the missus was so impressed that the AFL was such a safe, family game. And the unspoken trust between supporters of the mighty tiges... well, enough said. Australia's a bloody great place to live.

Anyway, from that day on, the missus was a Tiger. And hates Collingwood. It's gotten to the point now where she'll drag me to games, even if I don't feel like going. When her friends ask "you could have chosen any team, why the Tigers?", she answers with "ask me again after we win our next premiership. It'll be like nothing you've ever seen."

That my friends, is why life is good.

Oh this is sensational I love it ........ God Bless u and the missus m8

I used to play bush league magoos and then go like a cut cat to get to games but since retirement (thank god), marriage (thank god) and a move to the big smoke (sort of maybe i think thank god) getting to the footy is a lot easier.
I take a locker room M'ship each year and the atmosphere is fantastic ...... so good that I've been able to change the colour of the stripe the missus barracks for from red to yellow ( THANK BLOODY GOD FOR THAT!!!)

Nothin quite like goin to the footy and I can't wait to take my li5tle bloke to his first game

Great stories so far .... makes my spine tingle! :hearton

I grew up in Geelong amongst Geelong supporters, none more so than my ex hubby. I still think that is why I divorced him - I couldnt stand the Cats or their supporters. I always listened to the games on the radio but when I did get to the Tiger games we use to fight as I went ferral at opposition supporters - still do to this day! I moved to the Gold Coast and have had an on the bench memberships a lot of years when I could afford them - and never a week went by when I didnt watch the game or a replay. I still cried when we lost - even knowing the score before the replay! :'(

I moved back to Melbourne this time last year and bought an interchange membership - gets me access to M9 seating and I went to about 6 games last year. I have renewed this membership as I love getting to the games early and getting a seat on the fence - turn my radio on and watch listen and abuse the opposition! Just found out that I may be needed in Canberra a lot this year so may miss a few games if I have to stay over weekends - grrrrr.

Most weeks my Carlton tanking scum supporting flatmate goes to the games with me (he likes the Tigers - or more likely he is scared of not liking them when Im around) - and if we lose it normally means he risks walking home ..... I am that passionate and take the losses hard! I have been known to throw him out after a bad loss - worse if it is against Carlton too :bash

The worst thing has been the damage I have done with the remotes when watching on TV. My flatmate hides them now as I have destroyed all of them - and some walls too when they hit hard.

I plan on going to as many games as I can - even on my own - but I have a friend that lives close that will come with me this year - she is just as vocal and passionate - so look out for us ladies on the tele - we are sure to get on there eventually with our antics >:D

I will go to as many games as I can - and hope like hell that we do good this year! :gotigers

He may be better getting an overnighter for that weekend Lee. He's gonna be on a hiding to nothing, either way ;D
I hope we win, and you can still bash him up. :smash serves him right for supporting scumtankers.
Going by the sounds of things, he may be a convert soon ;)

Well when I started this thread I thought it would be interesting to share our stories /experiences since we are all so passionate and united about our beloved tiges.

Call it Miller spin, but I really feel we have the best supporters. Reading this thread has confirmed it as far as I am concerned.

Thank you all for sharing, keep it coming! Very intriguing reading.

My story's a little boring so will keep brief. I've aways gone to the games every year except for a period of a few years I was looking after an ill father. I live in Melbourne where all the beautiful people are (the leafy east of course, joking people! :P) so it's easy to get to the game.

I'm a little ashamed to say I've always gone to the footy with gf's I've converted. I've only had a few relationships as I tend to have long term ones, and even managed to convert my ex who works in celeb photography in paris (point being she was french and had no interest in aussie rules) to our great game.

I ran into a ex few months ago actually and was shocked to hear she still followed the tigers, so i don't feel so guilty now. Once bitten by a tiger, always a tiger. ;)

First year single in a long time this year, so was doing the retrospective start of year contemplation thing when I started this thread realising i would be going to the footy alone this year and was intrigued how everyone else goes to the footy.

I must say, it's going to make the first time I hear that tiger roar in 2008 that little more special this year to think all you guys are going to be prowling the stands.

GO TIGES!!!!!!!

Recruited my younger sister to the cause many years ago and she has paid me back beautifully by hooking up with martyshire. They are my usual companions, though my brother and couple of our mates are usually good for a footy outing.

Started following the Tiges in '72 when I was 12 because the coolest girl at school was Richmond and she only hung out with her own kind. Went over to basketball between 87 and 00 due to a dramatic change in my life so supported from afar, did not attend.

In 2001 could not resist the lure of the yellow and black and will never forget the feeling of walking down Bridge Road and past Punt Road to attend that first game back. It was like the MCG was reaching out its light tower arms and welcoming me back into the fold like a long lost friend.

We beat Carlton that day and I have attended every possible game since, missing a few a season. Usually go alone. Go to all interstate games - have the travel plans for Perth and Adelaide organised to perfection! Have AFL and Tiger Insider membership.

I'll be alone at the 'G and the Dome in 2008, but I expect I'll be offered parole and an early release back into the wider community after about Round 12. :)

Wasn't Caro by any chance ;D

Not unless she had red hair back then! Nooo, not our Caro. She then upped and moved to NSW, never to be heard from again but I stayed loyal. Remember, we were good in the 70's!
