WHAT THE CLUB GETS

Via the 2009 national draft, Gold Coast will be able to sign 12 17-year-olds

Herald Sun

I may be slow but doesn't this indicate they have access to 12 of the best 17 year old's this year 2009.

And if so, how is it "via the 2009 national draft" when they don't have draft picks until the 2010 draft.

at a guess, they may be excluded before the draft proper

I suppose the player has the option of whether he wants to sign or not, rather than if he'd been drafted and had no choice.
You would think if a player expected to be drafted he wouldn't sign with GC and go to an already established club, taking his chances via the draft.

Depends how persuasive they are I guess.

I might just become a GC supporter in years to come! 8)

Get your barf bag ready then mate, you might get a bit nauseuous watching those jumper colours running around all season.

Then again, considering our performance last week, guess you still need a barf bag. :hihi

Seeing that this is our last draft chance we need to get cracking!!!! :hihi

Heard that today and I find it sickening, what about the loyal supporters of clubs like the Tigers, the Bulldogs and the Saints. Why the *smile* should GC be gifted a premiership? Yes yes its all marketing I know, but the actual traditional supporters are more than that. Frankly I hope GC and WS go belly up and the TV revenue drops drmatically.

agree. i am all for a team on the gold coast, but i'm completely against admitting a 17th team. it will just make it so much harder for us to achieve success.

This is a joke.

To top it off McKenna was on SEN this morning and said that GC don't have to give away any of their draft picks for the uncontacted players they will be gifted from each club. He indicated that the AFL will decide on the compensation draft pick the clubs will get based on the quality of the player they give up. So if a good player decided to walk then the GC didn't have to give away any of it's picks and the AFL would give them a mid range pick, which would then in effect bump all other draft picks down a pick.

That's how I understood what McKenna was saying.

Again, a joke.

the amount of draft picks and concessions they are being awarded the next 2 years is absolutely staggering. did the AFL not learn from the west coast and adelaide template when they got the pick of their best players in their state leagues and were gifted a flag? the concessions freo and port were awarded is much closer to the mark. whats more, how come clubs like the RFC didn't kick up a stink about it? the concessions are way too generous. they should be made to do the hard yards like the rest of us.
