No we're not talking about highlights from the big Staffs career but the bacteria.
Article in todays hun confirms two Tigers have golden staph infections.
From the smidgin I have read about this germ it is highly infectious and extremely resistant to disinfectants when cleaning plus resistant to antibiotic treatment in wounds or injuries.
Why are the players still training and showering together with the rest of the boys?
Staph just loves getting into open wounds and most players would have scrapes and scratches from training and playing with two players being infected there's not much chance of cleaning the bacteria out of the showers, change rooms or medical rooms.

hard to get rid of isn't it.

I'm no expert, but doesn't it stay with you for life.

And isn't it caught mainly from Hospitals, due to them being so clean/disenfected.

They may have caught it from the playing uniforms - their always sparkling clean at Richmond, especially after a game. ;D

I'm not sure about stays with you for life. I wasn't allowed to bring my newborn baby home from hospital because he contracted Golden Staph. from a baby who'd been transferred from Melb to our local hospital. He's 23 now and has never had any further incidents with it. By coincidence he actually did his deb with the girl who transmitted the infection.

The bacteria is almost impossible to kill off. Hospitals and medical rooms etc. constantly use disinfectants, anti bacterials when cleaning but the bacteria mutates or just gets accustomed to the chemicals and gets tougher to wipe out.
Not sure if it stays with you for life as such but people have been known to die from Staph infections, probably when their resistance is low ie. after major surgery or old and infirm.

Introduction
Golden Staph or methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a potentially infectious bacterium that is carried by about 30% of the population.

About
Golden Staph bacteria are found in the nose and/or skin of about 30% of the population.

Most people are unaware that they are carrying Golden Staph, as the bacteria cannot cause any sort of infection until they penetrate the skin. People who are most susceptible to Golden Staph infections include newborns, nursing mothers and people who are suffering from other medical conditions that reduce their body's ability to fight off infection. The Golden Staph bacterium can cause a wide array of infectious diseases, including:

- Neonatal Golden Staph
Signs of Golden Staph infections in newborns can appear up to six weeks after birth, causing pus-filled skin lesions, exfoliation of the skin, meningitis or pneumonia .
- Postoperative Wound Infections
Golden Staph can cause wound infections in people who have undergone surgery. The severity of the infection can range from small abscesses and boils to life-threatening wound infections.
Staphylococcal Endocarditis

Golden Staph infections are a major problem in hospitals. Hospital staff take a number of precautions to prevent the spread of the bacteria, including handwashing; wearing gloves, masks and gowns; handling waste appropriately and handling laundry appropriately. Recent evidence suggests that most people who contract Golden Staph when in hospital are actually carrying the bacteria that they become infected with in the skin that lines their noses.

Health care
Golden Staph infections are diagnosed using blood tests. Minor skin infections may be treated topically (i.e. by lotions applied directly to the skin). A major problem with more severe Golden Staph infections is that the bacteria that cause the condition can be resistant to a wide range of antibiotics, e.g. about 90% of the Golden Staph bacteria are resistant to the antibiotic penicillin. Some Golden Staph infections respond to conventional antibiotic treatments, but some strains of the Golden Staph bacteria have become resistant to 'last resort' antibiotics such as methicillin and vancomycin. Patients with antibiotic resistant Golden Staph are placed in isolation to reduce the risks of the bacteria spreading.

interesting that 30% of the population carry it without knowing about it,so roughly 3 out of 10 PRE`S have it!

and there are different severities of golden staph also.
it can be anything from a minor skin infection to much worse like pneumonia and heart problems.
they diagnose the severity of it by a blood test so i guess our players only have a minor case.

This is a horrible infection. My mother suffered for two years with it and died. She was in agonising pain and I wouldn't want to see anybody else suffer the way she did.
