Grant Thomas Gone!! Lyon appointed [Merged]

The first thing Lyon should do is stop pretending they are a premiership team and clean the list right out.
I firmly believe the Aints need to go backwards to go forwards.

Unfortunately this is not the week to be appointed in making that happen.

I disagree that the Saints don't have a genuine premiership contenders list right now.In my view their 'window' is wide open right now.Cornflakes has already squandered 2 years of said window.

Lyon is an extremely bemusing appointment.

If ever their was a list that would benefit from a coach with genuine AFL senior coaching experience,it's the Saints.

From the interviews I've seen of Butterss, sss over the last few weeks he seems to have become  bessotted with Sydney's modus operandi, to the point of getting someone.anyone, with first hand knowledge of it.

I could be wrong evo but I thought their window closed at the end of 05, it's certainly shut now.

Have a look at this as to why i think so..

Harvey - past his best well and truly

Gehrig - see Harvey

Thompson - see Harvey

Hammil - On one leg and injury prone

Maguire - injured indefinately

Hayes - injured indefinately

Milne - struggling for form

Koschitzke - struggling

They have few key defensive options and are struggling in the ruck.
Add to this they have quite a few duds and less promising youngsters than many other sides including us.

Sure they still have some great players but IMO they have been leap frogged by other Victorian clubs and need a rebuild. i think they are dramatically overated and in decline.

We'll see.

Shows how overrated Barry Hall is.
So you wouldn't have him at Tigerland I take it? :spin
No chance whatsoever.
Oh that's right we are such a great team we don't need a player like that.
Do we?   Who would you rather have, a ball 'receiver' in Hall or a ball 'getter' in Richo ?

People can continue to write this man off, that suits me just fine.

He will continue to tear sides a new assholes each and every week. Superstar always.

Harvey also may not be at his late 90's best, but still an amazing player.

Agree on the whole that our list is overrated. Actually feel we were well coached and did more then we should with the injuries we have. Never felt we were the best side in the AFL.

You're a fool if you don't think Hall works hard to get the footy.

Sure had an off day in the GF but he had a blinder against Fremantle in the PF and worked his arse off.

Hall works just as hard as anyone and has the polish to convert his opportunities.

I'd have him at Richmond any day of the week. Super player.

If Hall was playing in another Victorian team, he wouldn't be as good as everybody thinks.

Nowadays, playing in one or two team state seems to overrate the value of the team's players. Kane Johnson was an example.

I never said Harvey wasn't a great player but he is clearly in decline and there must be question marks about him completing another season.

Interesting that you think they were well coached. :o

What about another overrated player in Riewoldt ?

This bloke shows no leadership whatsoever.

I think Ross Lyon will be a good appointment. Just don't bring this thread back in 2 years when he's sacked. Argh, coaching, the profession where you count everyday as your last.

Agree, Hall is as tough as nails and works very hard. In many ways very similar to Richo in that respect. Geez its a brave person to write off Hall. 232 goals 118 behinds in the last 3 seasons. Ooh I wish Richo could kick that straight.

LMAO at the bagging of Barry Hall. Great great player who had a bad Grand Final. He's done something that Richo has never done and that is play well in finals.

Good logic too ToO. Saints may be ready to tumble a little or at the least have levelled off.

Not sure that the Saints are as good as everyone thinks.   They recruited extremely well for three years during which they picked up Reiwoldt, Kosi, Ball, Goddard, Dal Santo, Maguire, Hamill, Gehrig, B Voss, X Clarke, Montagna and Gram.  They have barely recruited a player of any note since and their recruiting before this period was abyssmal.  Once they started their rise up the ladder they switched off the recruiting light almost overnight.  No other team would have given Peckett his last two seasons, not even RFC.

Maguire and Hayes will be coming back off serious injuries, their best midfielder is nearly as old as their coach, Their best forward is over 30 and doesn't enjoy playing footy, Hudgton is still their most reliable defender and their kids are few and far between.  If Kosi, Reiwoldt and Ball get injured again they will be in big trouble.

They have a core of very good players in their prime and that is about it.  Ross Lyon has inherited the toughest gig possible.  Stratospheric expectations, an impressive half-a-list and Rod Buttocks talking BS.

Yeah because I believe our list was over rated.
I think we got a few dratf picks people rated as a team of champions, when in reality half a dozen sides shared the same in draft pick benefits as us in the years prior and since, I can provide stats since, we have not been the outright best beneficiaries of the draft, but we have benefited well.

I think our midfield lacks the depth of our rivals and our list sits between 4 and 6 in the AFL.
Personally belief.
And with several players injured I firmly believe Grant Thomas did a very very good job at St.Kilda.

Each to their own of course.
Just feel the whole anti GT thing stemmed from him replacing Blight, media drove an agenda he couldnt coach.

Interesting assessment of the Saints list here:

Jason Cripps & Jason Mifsud the remaining assistant coaches at StKilda have both been given the bullet which means there has been a total cleanout.SOS is likely to fill one of the positions I would imagine.
