Greatest Drafting effort ever? 2003 draft

as for recruiting, it's great that we finally stopped offloading our first and second round picks for used players
(Sorry Staff, Brown and johnno)
Gilmour was a dissapointment

and that we're drafting our own blokes.

it looks like the youngsters have pushed a few older guys out to Coburg...wonder if they'll make it back too with the likes of Hughes and White doing well

Unfortuatenely everyone missed the intention of my original post.

It was trying to highlight that no club has ever been so successful with 3 late draft picks in the one draft that it appears we may have been with Hartigan, Tuck, Raines.

Goind points that if we had have been better with our earlier selection in this draft then we would have been in a pretty good position now.

The big variance gentleman is than spud is gone.

Furthermore spuds influence on our recruiting is alos gone.

That IMHO is the best thing about offerring a coach...any coach a 5 year contract. It means that all decisions are long term decisions and hence the strategy of investing in youth and playing and relying on youth as opposed to mature age hacks.

Do not underestimate

1. How much SPud screwed this club
2. How compromised Beck was in doing his job.
3. How good Miller is at all his jobs!
1. spud would have to be the worst coach this club has ever had if not the worst coach the afl vfl has seen and yet miller backed him for 3 yrs.
2. greg beck is probably the worst recruiting officer any club has had in history. my cousin who rose to the no 2 position at sydney has repeatedly told me beck was the laughing stock of the afl in recruiting circles. and yet miller hung on to him for 3 yrs. beck came to the club in 1995 i think. not a lot of quality kids came thru our door 95 to 04.
3. my criticisms of miller is not so much hes done a poor job and he has done poorly at times but the fact that we could of done much better when it comes to recruiting. ive also been highly critical of millers lack of long term vision in regards to list structure. until 2004 he recruited as thouigh we were only a couple of players away from glory.even 04 he chased solomon and copeland what were they going to cost us early picks thats what. even last yr he was keen on fevola again he would of cost us early picks.
i dont think miller has ever really understood the benefits of full on rebuilding utiliseing early picks.i come to this conclusion by millers own actions.

not a lot of quality came before 1995 also.

The question I have about Gilmour:

Was the pick wrong, or was the handling of the player wrong?
By all accounts he was a very skilled footballer, but maybe a little immature.
Could the club have done more to try get him up to the level, or did the player just have a crap attitude and not do his best to get to the level?
We got Limbach who was supposedly not in any shape to be a decent footballer when he reported to Punt road, then this off season he worked his ass off to make a fist of it.

Playing Devil's advocate:
Isn't that type of effort up to the player? You try to get the best talent and best "person" into your club. What part of Gilmour failed? Was it the head or the heart, and can that be blamed on the recruiter, or should it be blamed on the coaching staff?

Do people consider that the senior players should also help intergrate new blood into the club, and considering we've had some problems with leadership, we've failed them there too?

To me, it shows how much better we may have been if we'd got our 1998-2003 draft selections right.

Don't know of any of the other clubs' scouts who have anything positive to say about Beck.

Apparently he did have a flexible mind.
He could have polar views about the same player within a space of 5 minutes.
So I've been told by those who knew him well.
Beck sounds remarkabley like my ex.
