Missed the chat and Tiger Radio last night

Did Greg Miller have anything interesting to say??

A caller asked about the futures of some players. Understandably, he wouldn't make any comment on individuals, but he did say that we do need to add depth to our list. As it is quite evident that our depth is not what it could be.

It came across that we are somewhat hamstrung in some of the selections we can make. We are playing some who don't deserve a game and those players know it. But, basically, we have no choice but to play them.

He believes that the coaching department is working well together and really focused on getting the best out of the playing list.

Greg said he is trying to get an overall perspective of the Club and has sat in the coach's box for one game and amongst members/supporters and is learning about the club and its supporters.

Is involved in recruiting and has seen sons of Geoff Raines and Michael Roach play in recent times. If we were to draft them, we would only be able to take one player under the father-son rule.

He believes the club is headed in the right direction and is impressed with Ian Campbell.

Greg realises that a lot of people are placing a lot of faith in him and he hopes he can repay that faith, in time.

The one thing that impressed me is that said that he is distancing himself from the coaching department and observing the team objectively and that he will make the hard decisions on the list that way. Good to see he is in charge of list management and recruiting.

A caller called in and said that Beck hasn't done his job good enough over the years. It was interesting the Miller did not defend Beck in his reply. ;)

Also a caller called in and bagged a few players. Miller also didn't defend them also. All too often tiger officials on club corner would come up with excuses and defend the player being criticised. Good too see Greg appears to be objective and not beconing buddies with the players and staff members. Go Greg - I'll sharpen the axe for you.

Miller also didn't dedend them.

From recollection he didn't single out anyone either Harry. All he stated was that he wouldn't make any public judgments on individuals. On the other hand Greenberg(sp?) tried to defend the likes of Rogers (rightly or wrongly) by elluding to his performances of 2 or 3 years ago.

Maybe so Tony but i'd say the time has passed Matty by and if Miller is serious about casting aside some off the deadwood, players like Rogers, King Bidders, petticoat junction etc, well his your chance .

I liked Millers overall assement of where we were at and what it would take if the club was to have long and sustained success. He wasnt' afraid to call a spade a shovel . He indicated that he was in it for the long hall and that he wanted to be at the club until we tasted some succsess and as far as he was concerned he wanted to be apart of that.

The players the caller was reffering to was rogers and king.

Miller also stated that the reason we passed on some of our late picks last year was that Beck had insufficient support in the recruiting department and there was inadequate talent scouting during the year. This lead to us passing on the late picks as we had no idea what was out there (this is probably why we picked fleming and Nicholls aswell). This is un-professional IMO - we've had numerous staffing members in the coaching department and support staff yet we were undermanned in the area thats most critical - recruiting. No wonder we are where we have been for 20 years. However Greg said that himself and David Wheadon will be fully involved in this area.

Also he said that he's watched Raines kid (Tommy I think) and Roaches kid play recently. He was impressed with Raines, however he's recently suffered a broken collar bone - he'd fit in nicely on the injury list at tigerland at the moment ;D. We can only secure one with our third round pick and by the sounds of things it might be raines.

If young Raine's is as half as good as his old man we will have a decent young gun. Hopefully he can kick like his Pa. Long raking 50-60m drop punts out of the centre straight to a target.

Gee I'd like to see that....

What about the Ghost, did he have some sons that play footy that we can perhaps bag???

Harry, I could be wrong, but I thought Thomas was Michael Roach's son that was being referred to.

Maybe someone out there can let us know, just to clear up any confusion on my part.

Not quite sure. I even think Miller was confused about the names and wasn't sure who he was talking about.

Have to agree Harry. It wasn't all that clear how it came across. I basically made up my own mind because I think I remember hearing somewhere else that Michael's son's name is Thomas.

Anyway, hopefully someone will let us know.

Thats disturbing news about out recruiting staff. >:(

To pass on late picks because you don't know whats out there is shocking. Beck has to be the first to go in the post season clean out.

Some rather handy players picked post 50 in the recent drafts.

Johncock
Schneider
Zantuck
N Lonie
Corey Jones
Newman
Lokan
Patrick Bowden
Cameron Bruce

Another thing on a positive note that Miller mentioned.

Son of Roach and Son of Raines, possible draftees.

Will this mean the return of the famous "Duffle Coat" , intact with 8 on the back (sorry Pettifer - but hey!) ;D

I agree Tigerfurios the first one to go after Frawley goes will be Greg Beck this is the man who took Fiora at pick 4 and pavelich was next....and they took Pettifer in the first round another year and he has shown nothing

Hopefully numbers 4 and 8 are available next year

and 1,3, 7, 14,15, 16, 21, 22, 34, 44 ;D

You can add Paul Medhurst to that list. Interestingly we picked up Hudson that same year for an earlier pick - 49 I believe.

Forget the what if and what might have been.

The fact is that (IMHO) that the club is in good hands with the administration we have now put together.

I am very pleased to see that we have boosted our recruiting. the world will not rotate overnight, but I am far more comfortable under this regime than anything in the Past. I do believe that Ian CAMPBELL is a major bonus for us.

Go tigers. We must improve our imput this week and I believe that we can do this.

Go Tigers

Agree GT12, but if it is correct that Beck didn't have good intelligence on kids in the draft, then what the *smile* as the recruiting manager is he doing ???

That, as far as I am concerned is enough reason to get rid off the bloke. It is incumbent upon him to develop a network of scouts that can supply him with plenty of info on talented kids around the country. Clearly this is not happening.

As has been pointed out, Fiora and Pettifer are two of Beck's better recommended players. Some other players we could have picked up - Pavlich is well known, but Shaun Bourgoyne went at pick 14 the same year as Pettifer ???

In fairness, it is the coach who has the final say, but Beck performance so far has been about 2/10.

A good comment I heard a few years back was from ex tiger Merve Kane. He spoke about how ex players like him are never asked to eyeball certain kids that the club has its eye on. Now, call me silly, but if you get ex premiership players to give their opinion on certain kids, it could help weed out these disasters like Fiora and Pettifer.

To be fair Fiora would have gone high anyway as he was absolutely dominating for the Port Magpies at the time he was taken. He just hasnt progressed or puton any muscle. He still ahs potential jsut seems too soft going for the ball. Hes not the worst one we have picked.

Pettifer is still young aswell. I think these players should be judged on their careers more so than current impact. Admittedly those blokes havent set the world on fire YET as high draft picks should, but who knows they stil lare young and games wise Fiors has 50, Pettifer in the 20's.

Post 200 yay.
