I guess the point is, he should be close to their level coming through the junior system.

Let's be honest, he's been drafted to play AFL through Australian channels, he really should be well ahead of them skill wise.
Running & jumping ain't going to get him very far if he's struggling with the basics. Surely he can't be THAT bad of a kick.

What is his junior footy history? Did he start late?

Have to admit though I am a little surprised at some of the comments coming out of the club as to how 'raw' he is and comparing him to an Irish recruit.

Sounds extremely speculative.
Thats the big worry

A lot on this site get carried away with "highlight" reels Skull.

It does make the nieve calls for him to be our Full Back/Full Forward at AFL lvl this year by some on this site pure folly (they know who they are).

Most knew he needed time.

And those who said as much were howled down.

How precious are we going to be?

Cotchin has been put on the long term injury list as part of a forward planning exercise. They are obviously looking at one of the rookies playing in round 1. Can't happen unless someone goes on the LTI list. Put Cotchin on now so he serves out most of his eight weeks WHILE THERE ARE NO GAMES TO PLAY. Being on the LTI list doesn't make his injury any worse, nor does it stop him training. It just means he can't play till round 3. Coburg don't play in Round 1 of the AFL season anyway, so he will miss one game. How about giving credit to the club for working around the rules.

Gourdis is like an Irishman? Throwaway line, code for: "He is not ready to play yet. Come back and ask about him next year, or the year after. " Wouldn't be the first recruit who is way off the mark in his first year. Won't be the last either.

Kids need time. Most of the improvement in 2008 will come from the 2004 draft crew of Deledio, Tambling, Meyer, Pattison, Polo, McGuane, Thursfield and Morton and the 2005 intake of JON, Hughes, Casserly, White and Graham. Maybe Jackson, Raines, Foley, King, Schulz and Moore still have a bit left in them. Maybe Sylvester, Cartledge and Howat will surprise.

There is potential for a complete makeover for the side if even half of the group above step up a level.

Anything from the younger guys should be seen as a bonus.

so do you think its worth paying the 25k or so to promote a rookie if he is only going to be playing 1-2 games max?

i hope im wrong but i dont see cotchin playing before rnd 5

They won't promote anyone until they are ready to select them in a game so it won't cost anything until then. So do you think it is better to leave one of the best available 22 at Coburg because there is no one on the long term injured list to make room? This way gives more options.

All they are doing is getting the 8 weeks on the list requirement out of the way.

I wouldn't be fussed if Cotchin needed until round 10. He'll play when he is ready. If it means he plays out the year without a senior game at all it is no big deal.
