Griffiths

A large majority of AFL clubs faced similar dilemmas as RFC due to the so-called compromised drafts.
Interesting to see that history will record that RFC was one of the clubs that failed to have much recruiting success during this period. And the record will also show that a number of clubs did particularly well in recruiting talent during that same period.
Richmond was so far off the pace at the time ... thought everything would be righted by drafting re-cycled players discarded by their original clubs ... what an abysmal failure those ventures proved to be, potentially setting the Club even further back.
One day down the track RFC might again have its finger on the pulse when it comes to recruiting quality and talent, but that "one day" seems ever so far away still.

I think we should have punted Griffens. And gone after somebody good. Schache, for example. $1M pa for five years. Pick #6, the Griffens pick and/or an office-bearer.

I would have had no problems moving Griffiths on, because I just don't think he will deliver on the potential that he's supposedly had for all these years now. Been given plenty of opportunities (yeah, despite the injuries) and apart from a couple of cameo performances really hasn't contributed a great deal. Maybe 2017 will be his break-out season, but if it ain't then I guess, given his contract extension, he's got 2018 to do it. One day he will do it, won't he?

Griffiths is really our only tall Forward for next year considering Jack is now a half forward link player. Sad

I am a bit dubious as well. He has always been inconsistent even in his junior days. He has all the assets, he just doesn't quite have that killer instinct you need to be a great forward. As others mentioned though, with McBean and Vickery gone, we don't have a lot left in the tall department in the cupboard. Obviously the Tigers have taken the punt on Griffiths being the most likely to break out.

I am not sure either but he has the ability.

I wonder if we should look at someone like Mitch Brown as a back up, he is very likely to be a delisted free agent. For no other reason than being able to fill in whilst we see if Chol and/or C Moore come on

If some of the spirit and endeavour of both Chol and Callum Moore could be infused into Griffiths then there might be a chance RFC has got itself a decent tall forward and occasional ruckman,
Can't buy attitude and determination, they have to come from within and to date it seems Griffiths may be a little deficient in motivation to rise to the occasion.
Still got two more seasons to find out, I guess.

You'd want to have watched Chol at VFL level before talking up his endeavour over Griff's. And then you wouldn't.

Griff is your typical Richmond player.
Shows a little now and again and we hold on hope he'll become that player
End of the day it never happens.

Well I'm hoping with Vickery gone, Griffiths will settle down quite a lot and make CHF his.

He's big enough, mobile enough, can kick the ball a mile and take a good contested mark.

Its whats inside his head that worries me, his consistency for years now has not been good
at all (injuries aside). He really needs to get his head right then his body will follow and
that would mean having an ordinary player becoming a good player and making a
significant contribution inside the 50.

Its up to him to perform, I can't see Hardwick getting the best out of him, but maybe one
of the new Assistant Coaches will do the trick.

Just about sums it up :'(

How? He can't put a full month together let alone a full season. Injury prone and you can't say he is inconsistent, because he puts together one good game every year.

We just gotta hope that sometime over the pre-season that the penny drops with Griffiths and he truly realises AND believes that he could be a player in this elite competition ... nit necessarily a champion or anything ... just a very consistent and solid contributor whose efforts each and every week warrant the opposition paying him close attention in their match planning.

Anyone else on the Griff train for 2017?

I get the feeling he'll finally break out.

Our slow, methodical transition from half back doesn't suit him, because under that scenario he is required to read the play, find space and time leads. Not good at that is big Ben.

But as a mobile second ruck getting to contests, and getting the ball forward at all costs?

As a key forward receiving a heap of forward entries, many of them chaos balls?

As an aerial intercept for oppo kickouts?

He's the man.

He has frustrated me. Missed so many gimmes in crunch moments, spectated pack marks, not utilised his prodigious kick but he shows something and he is surprisingly agile when it hits the deck. Reckon he might step it up a notch this year.

to me the faults you mention will stymie his ability to do the good stuff you mention.

Putting that aside, even if he is good at the good stuff you mention, isn't enough.

Putting all that aside, I really hope he can lift enough to start delivering as a solid big man, because I'm genuinely concerned about our big men stocks.
