Hamstring problems....yes or no??

Without quoting any hard data, I would say that the vast majority of hammy injuries are caused by problems in either the glutes or lower back. Because the hammy is the weak point that is where the strain occurs. Chiro, physio, osteopath, massage etc which focuses on glutes/lower back will provide a lot of relief for the hammies. I had 2 seasons of footy ruined by hamstring strains only for a physio to diagnose the problem and sort it out almost immediately.

Agree, though there are plenty of cases where it is not that easily remedied either.

What I have read we should send Ben to Germany then rest then to the physio, chiro, masseuse and osteopath.

Oops forget the ballet as well.

When does he train and play?

Well Mel, obviously I don't know exactly how much time and effort he put into his hamstring recupperation after his season ending game in the semi final but what we I know is that just after the 2007 season ended he was arrested by police and sacked from West Coast as well as disappearing from the country allegedly getting up to no good in the mean time.
It's not a strech to suggest he had plenty of distractions at that time and that footy and his hamstring tear was no doubt the farthest thing from his mind.

This is a very interesting article I found on the web re ben's hamstrings.

What's often forgotten is he was having hamstring problems earlier in the season before the serious injury in his final game. Also it's been reported that he was held back this year from training due to recurring hamstring problems and that was a reason Collingwood overlooked him. He's got history with the injury and concern is justifable.

Only time will tell how well he has recovered.

Excellent response to Mel. Like you, Collingwood, StKilda and cast of 000's, I'm concerned how he will come back in his 31st year - was always one my issues with this facination in him. I am less concerned about his recovery than I am about his capacity to avoid recurrance - just as the excellent article you linked us to indicates - thanks ToO!

Just to add a little, while watching an old game from 2006, there was a notable absentee from West Coast's team - Ben Cousins, missing his 3rd week with a hamstring injury. My understanding from living in WA is that Cousins has had back related hamstring issues for a number of years. The two he did in 2007 were certainly not the first time he'd had problems.

Yeah thanks for the add, good call Freo2008................. sorry about your name though - prob wouldn;t make any difference what year you use in it while Harvs is coaching :hihi

I'm a WCE supporter and can confirm Ben has had issues with his hammys for a good few years. Really seemed to be aggravated when he came back from his time off. We were being very conservative with him and he ofgten missed more games than he was originally going to (even for supposed tweaks). I wouldnt be at all surprised if the hammy was the reason for the Pies cooling on him. Ben has been in awesome condition his whole life and his current build is typical so I wouldnt look too much at that as an indicator of him possibly staying injury free.

Chances are he will have a hamstring injury at least once sometime this year. The test will be how Richmond and Ben handle it. Just like Buckley at the Pies and Ben with us in 07, what would be a 2 week injury for a normal player could easily turn into a 6 weeker and they all add up. Like to wish Ben luck though. He'll always be WCE favourite son and much loved player.

At 3/4 time Cousins complained of some soreness. So what did our smart medical dept do?They put him back on so this thread is now alive & well.

We surely have the dumbest medical staff in the league.

Fancy sending Cousins back on after he'd been grabbing at his hamstrings at 3/4 time and we are 13 goals down.

That is one of stupidest things I've seen in football in years.

I think the quote was "bad hammys" so that narrows it down to 2 options Westy, either way bad news for us.

Honestly just makes the RFC look even stupider! Cant even medically manage the players let alone get them to play respectable footy!
The game was gone at 3/4 time,so why bring him back on.

I wonder two things??? How long will Cuz be out of the team? Will he ever play again??

Not being smart at all, but read my original thread. This hammy problem was almost a given!!

6 weeks. It's best he just takes the season easily as we are NO finals side. Just run the kids.

I cannot believe this, I just can't.

WTF?

Cousins apparently said he was OK to go back on, I really don't think we can blame the medicos for this.
