People say that he deserves his spot in the team due to his hard play which is the only positive aspect people can come up with.

Interesting stat on Rogers however. He has applied only 5 tackles for the whole year. Go figure.

In comparison to some softer players - Houlihan 5 tackles, Bowden 21, Tivendale 18, Fiora 4.

He's not even doing the 1 percenters - the things that he is being praised for. Along with this he gets beaten by his man most of the times and turns the ball over 2 out of 3 times he touches the ball.

Now can anyone remind me why, apart from being buddies with Frawely, he gets almost 100% game time every week?

Silence will give me assurance that people are also mystified with his selection.

Would give you the wrong assurance about me then......yawnnnnn ::)

Knew you'd agree with me Rosy.

But seriously its a mystery to me. Seing this clown running around in the no 4 guernsey and having his name on the locker with Raines and Lambert makes me laugh.

Look, I like to praise players - Coghlan is a gun, Johnson, Campbel and Richo are great players, Gas, AK and Chaff are reliable etc. But I cannot see anything positive in this guy.

Its like people trying to convince you that the sky is green - I just cannot see it. It seems like a conspiracy that I'm not a party to.

The sad thing is that his contract runs for another year and as long as spud is coach I'm gonna have to accept this.

Harry, you've sure got it in for our Matty!! What did he do to you?? Steal your parking spot at Safeway on a busy saturday morning or something??

The guy is making an effort out there. I've seen him pull off some pretty good shepherds this year and some solid hip and shoulders also! But I guess you don't get a stat for them do you.
He is a great clubman, a loyal Tiger and an all round good bloke! The team is winning at the moment and whilst he's not Mr Stats out there I do believe he's playing a part in our current winning formula.

I'm expecting a firey rebuttal so I've got the lead underwear on and ready to go!

I'm a great bloke - do I deserve a game? NO.

I don't think there will be too many responses to this.

Rogers will continue to get a game and perform a negating job. He will play on Stevens this week, Port's best midfielder (good luck Rogo, you're going to need it!!)

As discussed previously who else can fill this role? Newman is about the only one, but is only a cub and is progressing well in teh backline, he'll be in the midfield in a couple of seasons no doubt, but there is no one else to do that role now.

Cmon Harry,

I listed some other things that he does but you seemed to have forgotten to mention them in your rebuttal.

If you were to take Rogers out, who would you replace him with?? As far as I'm concerned lets see how we go over the next few games. If we start a losing streak then look at chopping heads! But at this stage...If it ain't broke, Don't fix it.

Yeah he ran with Crawford last week didn't he? And Buckley in round 1.

Ok, I'm not talking about Rogo cos I've done my bit on another thread.

The thing I've been thinking about is selection in general.

Plenty of people are calling for the selection of McGrath and Schulz.

They don't seem to think Marty is ready yet, and I've been told they aren't planning to play Jay yet.

But that made me wonder about people thinking youth is the way to go, rather than picking a fringe player who's in better form.

I disagree, though if a kids ready I'm all for him being given a go.

My feeling is that they have a duty to pick the best 22 players available each week.

We are playing for a premiership here, not at the end of a failed season where you experiment.

I think Rogo is definitely in our top 22 atm. I also think Kayne definitely isn't and has had more chances than any kid in our history to make a go of it.

If there's a spot vacant it has to go to the best available player (considering match ups and the type of player needed for a particular game,) whether it's Bidders, Mills, or Nicholls etc.

Effort and form at Coburg needs to be considered before age imo, and it's up to anyone there to find form good enough to claim spots in the senior team.

So Tiga - if it aint broke then don't fix it. So you truly beleive that we can win the premiership with the current list of players. Coz if thats what you are saying then you can be justified in not making changes even when we win.

Shepherds and bumps you say. So he is in the team because he shepherds and bumps. Fair enough.

He's the only decent option that I can think of as a "run with " player. You aren't happy with him, who do you replace him with in this role???

Rogo has been a great servent for the club but his time has unfortunately passed.

It is sad, but he will be remembered by many as the bloke who never hits a target, fumbles everything, and generally is a better player for the opposition rather than the team he actually plays for.

Move him back to the forward pocket and see how he goes.

Rogers will continue to be a part of the Tiger line-up until he is ranked outside our best 22 and/or there is someone BETTER to replace him in job the coaching staff askes him to do each week (a la what happened to Clinton King with Johnson and Cogs coming into the midfield this year).

RR - at last some sense has prevailed.

Theboss - he gets beaten everytime he is assigned a run with role. Dunc is the better option, but seeing that he is injured I would, as I have previously posted aswell, give that role to Newman, Zantuck, Chaffey, or even Fleming and Hyde. There are plenty of other options. If they were comprehensively beaten then they would at least match Rogers' performances.

Oh - and seeing that he's a good run with player to some, I'll remind you guys again of a telling stat -

5 TACKLES FOR THE YEAR....

This means he's nowhere near his man.

I don't agee with your other options Harry

Kellaway - too slow to run with a Crawford, Stevens etc, besides is always getting soft tissue injuries. Disposal is worse then Rogers.

Zantuck - no stamina to play in the midfield.

Hyde - Dud, saw this again in Rnd 1 against teh Pies when he played on Woewodin the second half and actually ran away from the ball on a couple of occasions.
Has shown nothing and is lucky to be on the list and you are suggesting he play on the oppositions gun midfielder- you can't be serious????

Chaffey - not that sort of player.

Fleming - sharing that role at the moment with Rogers.
Couldn't play this role for a full game.

I've posted my thoughts about Newman in this role previously and I'll say it again. He will be a good player for us but I would hate to see him playing in teh midfield at this stage of his career and play on guys like Crawford, McLeod, Stevens etc . In a couple of years perhaps but not now.

So you can see Harry there is no one else suitable so that's why he is getting a game, as simple as that.

Newman and Chaffey would be wasted solely in a negating roles. Ty is good for us when matching up on stronger but not so tall forwards - Lloyd, Hamill, etc... leaving Gas and AK to take opposition talls. Fleming rotated with Rogers in the tagging (or not) role on Crawford last week. Dunc would normally get the jobs on Buckley and Crawford and do them successfully (struggles against Voss, Macleod).

Just slightly off the topic, there is an argument on whether we should with Johnno, Cogs, Cambo, etc.. just take on opposition midfields one on one instead of having a tag.

The boss - so youre saying that Rogers is a better option than Dunc and that you would prefer Rogers over Dunc in the team (back me up here Rosy). You cannot be serious. Dunc is a 100 times better player than Rogers. (Rosy - can you set up a poll as to who people prefer as a tagging option out of Rogers and Dunc). A fit Dunc stops Buckley and Hird all the time.

Theboss - 5 tackles - Does this mean anything to you. If youre a run with player, you would be stopping opponents, and the way you stop them is by getting the ball first or by tackling.

Zantuck - no stamina you say. give him time to build up his stamina i say.

Hyde - to be fair on him he hasn't been given a chance. IMO he shows a bit but unfortunately we won't find this out.

Chaffey - why isn't he this type of player. Is accountable, has stamina, is fast, strong, and wants to play in the middle. I think he is a great option.

Newman is the man IMO and its time to blood him in - not too young - have a look at COGS.

At the end of the day he gets beaten too often and has no other strings to his bow, apart from perhaps playing in the forward line.

Hahaha you are a lazy bugger Harry...I made this board so people could make their own polls. Give it a test drive. ;)

I will back you up though. Dunc is not only the best tagger in our team, when he's fit he's the best tagger in the league.
Go Dunc.....now this is a conversation I am starting to enjoy :rollin

P.S. I wouldn't be over confident on the poll Harry. Over the past few years on the message boards I've been a pretty lone hand at times flying Dunc's flag for him.
I think I get the points still though. I'm sure everyone loves him and just bag him to stir me. :'(

I never said that Rogo is a better option that Dunc in that role but I think that on certain opposition players he is a better match. I think that these days Dunc would struggle on a player like Mcleod, Crawford, Milne, N. Stevens, Camporeale who are quick. Other opponents such as Buckley, Hird, Yze would better suit Dunc.

So we both agree that other than Newman and possibly Chaffey we have no other option. Everybody bar a handful of optimistic supporters knows that Hyde is no good and you agree that Zantuck has no stamina to play in that role. Well Fortunately the coaching panel agrees with me because Rogers will continue to get a game and theer is no way Frawley will play Newman in that role this season or take Chaffey off the backline.

So just get used to seeing Rogo playing Harry until the end of the season anyway and come trade/draft time we will see what is out there to take over this role.
