Watched the first half of the Scum v Hawks tonight and sure enough, saw yet another example of the negative way in which footy is headed IMO.
Used to be able to and enjoyed watching many of the other games that were on each round. But now footy seems to have lost its broader appeal, for me anyway.
Last week was the same. While I was watching the Tigers run around I was honestly bored with the game and before half time was thinking about what other things I could do rather then sit and watch a game that was so boring that sleep seemed like a better option. Or more accurately sleep seemed like it might have been an involuntary consequence of watching the game.
But it isn't just the Tigers that are playing boring footy in the last few weeks that has me concerned. Most other teams play this posession style, kick it backwards crap too.
IMO the new kick-in rule has only contributed to this keepings off style footy. It has also made them game quicker which has resulted in more severe injuries and will ensure that players have to retire earlier than they have had to in the past.
The kick in rule should be abandoned and replaced with the old rule. The only rule change I am in favour of is the 'play on if the ball is kicked backwards and not marked inside the attacking forward 50 metre arc' (might be hard to police at the SCG though as the 50m arc stops when it hits the centre square). Other than that leave the bloody rules alone!!
Another thing that is contributing to the lessening appeal of watching nuetral games of footy is the umpiring. For anyone who watched the first half of the game tonight you will have seen many examples of what I mean. The Hawks admittedly werent playing well but the umpires were killing them with terrible decisions or 'non-decisions' in some cases that resulted in a minimum of 4 goals for scumwood.
The old saying that the umpires have done a good job if you dont notice them, seems to be a lifetime away and something we can now only dream of. Especially when you have clowns like Goldspink and MacLaren thinking that people go and watch the games to see them perform. :
What are your thoughts people?
