Has Sam been sacked?

he is an intelligent man
Too funny L&C. Newman is a lot of things but intelligent isn't one of them.

I don't watch the footy show and have no particular gripe with Sam, but the dude is over 60 and hasn't had any inner sanctum involvement at AFL club level for a long, long time. It’s about time he was put out to pasture and replaced with someone a bit more relevant.

When I want to listen to a cantankerous, self-aggrandising, 1950’s teen throwback that makes faverage gags I call my Dad. I can understand how some people find it entertaining, but if it goes long enough you eventually say “that’s great Dad, all the best” and hang up. Or turn off.

Here hear laff.
If women want to be involved in footy, they should be serving us beer at the football in bikinis and
pole dancing on the behind posts!!!!
I finally found you Dad!

You can knock an "old" guy for not being relevant and not having his pulse on the game (or the business/field he is in), but ripping into him as not intelligent is unfair. Intelligence can be retained as you age, and much of history's greatest writings, science, and philosophy has come from those on the wrong side of the age scale.

Perhaps Elmer proved your point that intelligence does come with age - certainly wisdom does ;D

Its still the only football show as far as i am concerned. The comedy is fine and i respect Lyon and Brayshaw, especially Brayshaw. I really hope Sam stays, but i do want to see a Sam Newman who is focused on football only and not the other muck that the footy journo's resort to.

Haven't watched the tape yet but I worry for poor old Billy taking over Sam's job.
I listen to Billy regularly on SEN and he is a very rude little boy.
The gender neuters have taken Sam down just wait till they realise Billy's not much different.

Sam has gained experience with age but it doesn’t make him intelligent. Cows learn not to touch electric fences because it hurts, it doesn’t make them smart. Newman has perviously had enough charisma and swagger to bluff his way through the pain, this time he’s been burnt.

IMO Billy is the perfect replacement as he is equally intellectually challenged. He’ll keep bumping into the fence looking for his next gag or headline. Just not sure he has Sam’s strengths to survive the pain.

Pain? What pain????

I wouldnt mind "suffering" some of that pain with the money those guys get paid!!

The whole situation regarding Caro is ridiculous. The world has gone to *smile*.

This is an incorrect statement though.

Just this weekend Healy had a big right up on the merits and benefits of ruck work. Newman was listed as one of the first players to approach ruckwork from a scientific perspective. Just a few years ago, Madden, Newman, and one other (was it Scott?) were listed as the three best brains to pick in terms of assistance with ruck technique.

Also your post alluded to him being unintelligent because of age, and that was my main gripe with your post.

You can consider the guy a tool, but its not accurate to say he is not intelligent.

Yep Sam is definitely intelligent. He just doesn't really give a $%^# what people think of him. There's always someone getting hurt by a statament someone makes these days. To do with egos more than anything else. My philosophy has always been if I don't like something don't do it. People watch Newman for reactions, then complain they don't like it. We all know what he's like.

Billy Brownless would be a great replacement I reckon.

Newman is shock value - others can't deliver it. That is his gig. He is the closest thing to Graham Kennedy the show has. He's wired differently, thinks differently - so it works for him. There are worse things than Sam that these "bastions of our virtue" could have been chasing down. Sam's an easier, gettable target. Perhaos they should have been watching SBS at that time instead. Like you Skip, I sigh at the seriousness of it all. It wasn't serious in the first place was it, and easily plays the other way at times?

Billy was OK. No where near as thoughtful or clever, but he'll do for the time being

It's easy to ignore Sam but I hope you always find time for your dear old dad Elmer. :hearton

As for Sam being stood aside there's something I don't get. Does he organise all his props himself and sneak them in under his trenchcoat, does he do his own make-up when it's needed for his act and does he set aside time on the running sheet for his stunts?

It seems to me he's a bit of a scapegoat when others involved in the program obviously let him go ahead with his attention-grabbing shenanigans. Not that I care about his fate in any way.

Sam has to run his ideas past management and they're usually happy to let him run with them.
He's the perfect kamikaze because he loves to push boundaries and confront the senses. It helps that he considers it all to be a game, just a bit of fun and entertainment.
Just unfortunate that those in charge were to stupid to see the *smile* hitting the fan on this one and refusing to take evasive action. Much easier to let Sam get nailed and try to patch up afterwards.
