PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Interesting to see champion data stats on week one.  Apparently average disposal numbers have jumped by about 10% or around 30 disposals.  This is attributable to the new kick in rule, the no tolerance on 50 metre penaties and pinging anyone diving on the ball.  This is supposed to make the game more free flowing but is it making it too difficult for sides other than those loaded with pacy atheletes to compete.  I pondered over our midfield's strength in contested ball while loose ball gets (our achilles heel) have gone through the roof.  Will we get a lot more of the Friday night blowouts when a side has a team covered for pace and admittedly foot skill.

In the old days you could start a brawl if the other side got on top.  Looks like if the other side has too much leg speed - a lot more one sided contests will ensue.

Big power forwards might disappear as might big bodied inside players, or natural footballers who are not atheletes.

TW has foreshadowed the trend and acted so we might be OK in the long run, but do we really want to see a game of 'coast to coast' goals a la basketball?

Also the natural timing and feel of the game changes. Breaks in the game allow for regrouping and restrategising (allows spectators to find their beer as well) and allow different sort of players to compete. Is the game getting better or just faster?
