Strategy.
1 Attempt during trade week to position our selves to pick up who we want in the national draft.
2 Continue with the efforts made to bring in youngsters* through the draft with emphasis given to skill, attitude and body size. In other words if a player can't tick all of those boxes, not for us.
3 Empower Craig Cameron to make the hard decisions on current players, having regard to the need to bring along a group who are capable of sustaining September action, from about 2010/11 on.
Specifics.
We need a ruckman and skinny Warny has not shown enough to suggest he is that man. Bailey on the other hand has.
Brown, Newman together with King, Mcmahon and Raines are likely to attract some attention from other clubs and allow us to increase our chances of a sustained improvement in 2-4 years time. While it is likely that we will drop back next year our greater acess to players in this draft will give us a quantum advantage over opposing teams, as we go forward.
Possibilities.
I think we may finish up with picks 9, 27, 43 and 59.
I suggest the following,
1) Brown and King to runners-up Hawthorn, for Max Bailey.
2) Mcmahon and Raines to Melbourne for d/p 18.
3) Newman and picks 9 and 59 to Carlton for picks 6 and 40.
4) Casserly Johnson Tivendale delisted.
New Bailey.
8 Cartledge or Collard.
d/p 6 Ziebell.
18 Vickery.
27 Cousins.* (If he is still around at this pick I'd take him, in no small part, b/c of what he could bring to the training of our youngsters.)
40 Bannister.
43 Roughhead.
