Lets get things into perspective hear people the hawks are a joke and anyone thinking otherwise is kidding themselves
Lets start off field first.
Another $1 million dollar loss in on the cards this year, and that as far as hawthorn fans are concerned is the good news. The Afl's underwriting of Waverley has run out, so the 900k a year they got from them is over. Pets around around Melbourne are breathing a collective sigh at just being told by their owners that there memberships will not be renewed, and they dont have to wear brown and gold scarfes.
They have to sell home games to Brisbane to try and make a buck, next year they will sell one for 400k, really great for their melbourne members...not.
Due to the pet fiasco and other coprorate muddlings, membership figures have been overstated and exagerrated for years. And the true proof of this is that no-one goes to see Hawthorn play. Apart from the other low fan based clubs like the buldogs and the kangaroos, the hawks are on the bottom of the ladder in terms of getting people to go through the gate.
They have to play home games in launceston to try and survive.
They are broke have few prospects, have few supporters, and by the time these kids have the time to improve, they either would have merged or just gone out of business.
Why would you buy a membership if you were a hawk fan next year, you are not gunna play finals, and you play 7 games interstate!
On the field
The on field strategy to sell off highly paid players and invest in youth, is not a strategy it is a fight to survive. They cant afford to pay more than 92.5% of the tpp and hence anyone earning big bucks is history. Crawf would have been traded if someone wanted to pay his 800k a year wage. Spider also. Just as sidenote how do you think these senior players are gunna feel when the directive from the board is not to win games but develop youth? Great for team unity...not!!!
It is not as simple as getting draft picks and then them becoming stars. More than 50% of picks will be duds, and even if they are not you have to have the structure in place to develop them. Alistair Clarkson in as coach means these kids will have the worst coach in the league to develop under.
People are talking about bottoming out and the St Kilda model. The St Kilda model firstly is yet to achive the ultimate success. But, assuming it is on the right track, it also involves recruiting senior players to add to the mix of youth. Hamill, Gehrig, Penny, Black( till this year ) are all absolute guns and key players. Furthermore the St Kilda model assumes that the draft picks will be as good as Riewolt and Kosi. I'll give you a tip..Roughie and Buddie are no Riewalt and Kosi....and neither are Clarke, Dowler or Kennedy!!!!
In the wash having draft picks is great but easy to do...just tank and trade your older experienced players for more picks...getting a team to win a premiership is alot more involved, and I for one a m glad I go for the tigers and not the hawks, we have a bigger following, a prouder history, Brett Deledio, a coach, and Greg Miller.
