On FC Monday night, the panel were talking to Lloyd in regards to the improvement of David Hille in the Ruck.
During the video grab of Hille's highlights what really grabbed my attention was the fact that Welsh was on the end of EVERY tap clearance - and I mean literally EVERY clearance.
Forget about the Lloyd and Lucas factor - Hille / Welsh is obviously the Bummers Ace card.

Welsh got ten or twelve clearances last week.

Bommers have really turned around their clearance work, after being terrible at the start of the year they are now consistently winning them.

Funny how the gameplan now mysteriously ‘works’ when the team is winning the 50/50s.

OK he's got aggression and got a few clearances last weekbut I dont rate him personally. Just an opinion !!!
He would fit in nicely at Tigerland cause he cant kick.

Yeah. Your backmen look a lot better when the ball is up the other end. ;D

They're still playing shootout. The Brisbane game was a forty goal game. Black took no part. Real road effort by the Lions. I sacked Power a couple of years ago. The Bears have one midfielder - Black; we'll brain them.

To the Smallgoods - Welsh has been a real find. He's doing the job Monfries was trying for earlier, defensive inside mid, but he just keeps clearing it.

Hille is in career best form by streets. Watson is back in there too. Very strong over the ball. Lonergan will win leather in close and run away with it.

Riemers is handy. Will get it if not watched. Can use long. Stanton beat his opponent last week. A career first. Kicking has gone apeshit in the last year or so. Can use.

You know you're team is no good if that Ewok, what's his name again... McVeigh can get the ball in the middle. If he gets the ball against us Wallet has no idea.

Surprisingly that fraud Nathan Lovett Murray has been going okay. And Lovett is no loss. A total liability for most of this year. Been reading reviews of games he played a year ago. Jetta reached the level last week. May have matured.

Biggles Laycock is running away from the ball a bit less.

Monfries has been good. Playing forward again. Gets himself into the game even when he can't get the ball.

Lloyd is moving well again. Lucas is on the way back. Nash is turning it over too often from receives. Myers was flying. Peverill is moving freely and is back with a vengeance.

The Bummers are very ordinary. If we don't beat them blame the coach. Knights. ;D

And sure, pmac, Welsh may get exposed any day now. You might be right. But ATM he's going ballistic.

MvVeigh is the one out with the knee.

The Hille/Welsh combo was highlighted on OTC this week too. Needs to be shut down. Hille's tap work has been very good. We'll need to be tight in the middle and at stoppages. We win our share of these and we'll probably get home with our strength up forward.

I think Tuck or Johnson will have a run with role.

Simmonds got torn a new one in that third quarter against them last time.

I'm not scared of Essendon, they dont have enough defender to go with our forwards. Throw in Richo and they have a big problem....

Every time Hille went to the bench the Dons blew a 20 point lead with Softcock in the ruck. It wasn't just that he was terrible, not even jumping half the time, but the other players in the guts didn't get a hand on it either. Maybe they expected the opposition ruck to win the tap and thus were defensive and hesitant. It was like they lost all confidence when Hille wasn't there to show the way.

We need to work Hille HARD all game to force him to the bench, not rest up forward.

Hill is their ruck division. For most of the year, Laycock has racked up better stats rucking from the bench. He is generally just bad, and people hear cry about Patto.

One of the many improvements in Hille's game this year has been his ground work at the stoppages, particularly the centre bounces. This is new age ruck work - not your sissy outside game, which has been going on for years. Inside ruck work is all the rage if you're a footy coach.

In the Carlton game Hille routinely brought the ball to ground near his feet, often just behind him. Then he'd target Chris Judd for the block. He laid several shepherds on the limping Judd with good effect.

But it doesn't stop at that. He has very clean and quick feet for a ruck and he will often sprint to space to provide a marking option - either to the north east point of the square (right front to attacking goal - ideal for a right footer to send it in) or to the right wing where he can easily win an aerial contest, usually against a small. (His speed over the lawn is surprising.)

So in addition to the direct taps to a mid, he works at the defensive taps (to his feet and behind), blocks smalls and even targets particular opponents at the fall. He can clear at the fall by hand and runs to receive.

The bloke is flying.

So our rucks, who concede a mass and strength advantage, have to work on Hille. We have to block him at the fall. We have to go with him, remember we know where he will look to spot up, to make sure we stay inside him at the aerial contests on the flank and wing. He seldom marks over an opponent but is unstoppable in front.

And, as been rightly pointed out already, we have to work him hard when we are in possession.

Laycock played his best game of the season last weekend. He is a dud but ATM he's an improving dud. His speed on the lead will test any of our players. But we know he's frightened. Unless Wallet is too worried about his post Richmond media image we should slap Laycock. Let him have a few. He will turn it up; he always has.

If we can defend and then gas Hille we can at least get square in the ruck. And if our smalls are all over their ruck plans - and they should be - we can win our clearances despite his performance at the taps.

This is a watershed game for us tactically IMO. If we don't attend to Hille, even with our crippled #1 ruck and plodding #2, we aren't paying attention.

The midfield battles are pretty straightforward. Left field - Sugar should go to Watson's boy. If he can negate him at the stoppages he will flog him the other way. Tuck can school the inexperienced Welsh and Foley can do his thing on Lonergan. Lids should play a run with on Stanton. Let's see who's better equipped to play two-way footy. Peverill will go with Deledio, I guess, so Lids has to stick hard to Stanton. A battle of wills will only improve our lad. McMahon can play on Peverill, a little wide of Lids. Whne Stanton rolls the dice Lids goes with him. If Peverill stays that leaves McMuffin free. If Stanton goes to McMuffin that leaves McMuffin free.

If Lids can't man Stanton let Polo have a go.

Cotchin? I'd like to see him sit out the first quarter. We're not running out of legs; we're running out of rotations. Flank in the second quarter and then mid some time in the third.

I'm not that worried about their forwards. If we beat them in the middle we'll win. Even if Richo doesn't play.

Pretty evenly matched on current form, may the better side win.
