It seems there are stats on just about every facet of a players or teams game.
What importance do people put on stats?

Some seem meaningless, some are important measurements and gauge how a team or player is "travelling".
But stats don't always tell the whole story imo.

Effective kicks and handballs are tallied ie the dinky 20m sideways kick may not always be to a teams advantage.
How often have we seen half a dozen disposals with the ball ending up from where it started (I acknowledge its about keeping possession at all costs).
How do you measure cheap possesions against ones to your advantage?
How do measure a players ability to run to advantage, run to support a teammate or perhaps offer a better option then not be used. How do you measure a players ability to "gut run" to the right position.

Are stats an integral tool? Do stats tell the whole story?
Are we becoming overwhelmed with meaningless stats? Are they becoming an "industry"?

Thoughts?
