We all know in footy that teams will have periods of success then they will need to rebuild again. This yo-yoing up and down for decades has become a given but its had me pondering, how would you maintain a winning side on the park for an extended period of time?
At the moment we seem to be developing a side to make an assault on the premiership in the near future the thing is, if that becomes a reality in 2-3 years time, whenever, what then? years of abyss again? Im sure a lot of you and many learned experts have engaged this thought over the years, so I thought it would be interesting to hear others peoples angles and theories as well as share mine.
Goal: To maintain a strong Club which is always in the hunt for a Premiership.
here’s my angle and it involves a more life outlook perspective more than a direct footy related approach, so bear with me.
If you look at the yin/yang mantra it eludes to everything in life being equal and balanced all the time. If you go up, you have to come down at some point etc etc. I believe that when you reach the top you can maintain it as long as you don’t go overboard with it, thats the balancing act i suppose.
Being a strong side which is continually in the hunt is what I’m saying, rather than being the ultimate “demolishing everything in its path” type team. If you do become virtually indestructible for awhile, the imbalance will eventually balance out with an unsavoury comedown ala Essendon now and if my theory is on the right path, Brisbane will be next to follow.
With this in mind, I’d rather have a club that is continually making finals every year, even if its only just, and still in the hunt rather than a club which kills it for awhile and drops off the radar while rebuilding.
When you win a premiership it gives you a hell of a lot of bargaining power at the trade table so its here where i think the bullet needs to be bitten for the club to balance out the squad again. The club must trade a star player/s for a primo draft pick/s. Replacing an older star/s for future star/s, that’s the balance. Its one hell of a balancing act though.
1. make sure you have confidence in your next tier players to take up the slack.
2. make the trade look un-ruthless as possible.
3. be methodical in choosing which star player to trade.
Im sure theres nothing new about this idealism but I still believe it’s a good approach for long term success.
Big calls need to made during the trading period after a premiership to take advantage of the bounty of so called “Premiership Players” you have available for trade.
Would love to hear your theories.
