PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

Due to discussions in another thread I thought it might be interesting to post relevant club results (bottom lines) of other teams to finish 16th since 1995 (when we went to 16 sides in the league). Main emphasis being, how long it took them to make finals again.

1995 & 1996 (Fitzroy, out of the competition after 96 season)
1997 Melb (next years made 4th, 14th, 3rd, 11th, 6th, 14th, 5th, 7th, 7th, 14th & 16th)**
1998 Bris (then finished 3rd the next year)
1999 Coll (next years made 15th, 9th, then 4th)
2000 St Kil (next years 15th, 15th, 11th, 3rd)
2001 Freo (next years 13th then 5th)
2002 Carl (basketcase of the league...next years they made 15th, 11th, 16th, 16th, 15th, 11th)
2003 Bull (next years made 14th, 9th, 8th & 3rd)***
2004 RFC (next years made 12th, 9th, 16th & 9th)
2005 Carlton (see above)
2006 Carlton (see above)
2007 RFC (see above)
2008 Melbourne (see above)

What I take from that is...

Since we went to 16 teams the only two sides worse than us have been Fitzroy and Carlton. That is embarassing.

Since 1995 nine sides have finished on the bottom. Only 3 have not made finals within 4 years (respectfully including Fitzroy who were in their dying years).

Of the 6 who have made finals within 4 years of hitting the bottom, 2 did it the next year, 1 did it within 2 years, 1 did it in 3 years and 2 did it within 4 years). When we couldn't do any of them and are the only team other than Carlton since we went to 16 teams to finish on the bottom at least twice.

If we make finals in 2009 it will be a little redemption and be our first CONCRETE step to getting some respect back.

If we do not make finals in 2009 our humilation grows.

There is no excuse for not making finals in 2009. None. Every department and aspect of the club has been changed and/or has improved it's performance except the coaching department.

** I put so many years for Melbourne to show despite their up and down rep they still bounced back better.
*** Clarkson, Eade and Wallace were all appointed at the same time with club lists roughly seen at the same level as each other. Forget Clarkson who now has a premiership to his name in his 4th year, look at Eade's contract compared to Wallace (and eade was only given 3 years initially) his performance has at least always improved and his made finals in his 4th year unlike Wallace.

As I have said, I support Wallace but those who do so blindly and think he can keep his job based on ANY reason if he doesn't make finals next year are wrong in my opinion. Enough is enough.

If we don't make it he will be as much a victim of the clubs poor performance before him as he will during his reign. Fair or not, that is reality. It doesn't take that long to turn a club around, only Carlton have done it worse. The club will have no choice but to start making people accountable, you can't just keep hemorrhaging and saying "Ah things are looking up finally, should get better soon". If your not playing finals, your not being competitive considering 50% of the competition does every year.

I believe we will make finals and I believe Wallace will prove himself capable of getting us there. I merely post this because I find it hard to fathom how in respect to the above facts some think we could possibly entertain the idea of keeping him if we didn't make finals.
