Overall im very happy with the outcome of the draft.
Young Jack reminds me of a Lance Whitnall in the fact that he,s a "Thinking" Footballer and not an athlete playing football. While he,s seen as a Fwd it wouldnt suprise me if as Phanto has said many times its much easier to turn a Fwd into a backman[hence Whitnall] than a backman into a fwd.Terry may see Jack as our future FB.If so i can see why we passed up on someone like Mckenzie.
Or i.ll take it a bit further.Versatlity is the go these days.Imagine Terry having Polak,Shultz & Jack at his disposal to whatever situation occurs during a game.

Edwards i cant really comment on as i havnt seen him play but by all reports we all should be very happy with this kid.
Conners IMO was the icing on the cake. Was suprised by how far he dropped but there were rumours in regards to his attitude. If so i dont care.Terry will sort him out.

Peterson has the Terry,s pick written all over him. From reports this kid could be anything.
Collins dont know much of but welcome to to the Den.

I have a mixed feel about this draft.  Overall I am pretty happy, it's our first pick that has me wondering if we took the best player available.

I have read some reports saying that Riewoldt is athletic.  Others say he is a touch slow.  Can anyone let me know the real story?  If he is slow, how will this limit him? (ie. to what positions, will he be able to step up to senior level?)  He is also not a tall KPP.  Just an average height, so what is it about him that sets him apart?  I presume he can just flat out play?

I get the feeling we may have done VERY well later on in the draft.   I am even going to put my mouth where my feelings lie and say we will have a brownlow medalist from this draft.

Riewoldt is not really slow, just doesn't have the pace of say a Nathan Brown (from this draft) or a L Hansen. I don't think he's Ben Holland slow. He also needs to improve his endurance. As for his height, he's 192 to 193 now, which isn't far off Jon Brown. He's taller than N Riewoldt at the same age and I think his hand span measurements suggested he would grow at least another 2 or 3cms. Th thing about Jack is he is arrogant and competitive. I get the feeling he doesn't like to lose. He's also a gamebreaker. His last qtr against NSW/ACT in the championships proved that with 3 or 4 goals in the last qtr most of which were from huge pack marks. He has also shown he can dominate against men at VFL level taking 10 (or 12?) marks against Bendigo Bombers towrads the end of the season and kicked 4 goals i think.

Don't worry, we've got a winner in Junior Roo.

Wandered down to Punt Road this morning. The feeling amongst the recruiting staff was very good. An almost unanimous feeling that all the cards had gone our way.

Both Francis & Peter couldn't believe that we'd gor Riewoldt at pick 13. The gist of it is that if we'd kept pick #8, Riewoldt would have been our choice. So we got Riewoldt & Polak, and lost nothing.

I'm told, by Peter especially, that Edwards will be better than both Gilbee & McMahon. His physiological test results indicate a much better potential than both. Peter reckons he could be one of the best running outside midfielders in the comp.

Conners, at #58, was a gift. Francis was very angry at Greg because he thought the Polak deal had cost us Connors, with the loss of that 3rd round pick. With Connors still available at #58, Francis jumped on him.

Peterson, from what CC told me, and CC went to the after draft lunch yesterday, was that Peterson has an excellent verticle leap for his size. Methinks an eventual Russell Robertson might be the go. We'll see.

And Collins, well, we'll see.

An excellent group came out, this morning, to compete for the Rookie Draft. And there were a good collection of varying types:

Kennedy-Hunt, Geelong, & Macaffer, Gippsland, were medium forwards.
Hier, from SA, & Avery, Bendigo, for the 3rd tall defenders possie.
Harbrow & Barnes down from the Murray competing for small running spots.

Not too worried about a ruckman in the RD.
There are 4 top ruckman available next year.
Kreuzer from the Knights, Sullivan from the Jets, Bellchambers from Tassie & McEvoy from the Murray. They all can't disappear in the 1st round next year.

Yes, a pretty good draft.

From memory Peterson has a standing vertical leap of 93cms!! :o

You mention 6 players Phanto, how many were there in total?

yeah agree masochist.  I get constantly annoyed with the constant whining about 17y.o draftees being skinny.  What active 17 y.o isn't skinny?

I'm no juniors expert, just get whatever snippets of info I can from the mighty PRE mostly, but on the face of it this year, I'm rapt.  The bankers sound good, the smokie sounds superb.  Another tip: they breed 'em tough in Kunnunurra, no pussies in that part of the world.  Love to see somne footage, hint hint evo and rosy.

Also rapt I haven't read any compleeing criticism, at all.  Craw's McK v Edwards call is fair enough, but nothing to cry about, and the important thing is Edwards sounds like a player.  I haven't seen him at all, but what popped into my head was Ken Hunter, skinny, skilled and tough.  Who knows though.  Bloody rapt, all clubs seem pretty rapt, but my feeling is we've done well even in the context of the superdraft.
only 5 kids in this draft were below 70kg(really skinny) we took 2 of them and a third barely got there. both peterson and edwards have light frames to my way of thinking meaning it will be very hard for them to bulk up. if i have any real criticism this draft its this fact. and this is not in anyway having a go at those boys im happy to have them its just a pet hate of mine and one of the risks of the caper.

agreed 100%

happy to have these boys, the talent is evident.

Who in particular other than Fiora? Most kids will beef up well with a couple of pre-seasons.

juniors i have concerns over. meyer jon tambling mcguane casserly and thursfield seniors krakouer hyde moore to name a few.

The RFC have done a lot of work in the "will they fill out" factor, probably a lot more work than when we drafted players like Fiora....

I hope they also looked at the genetic factor (like parents and other family members) to see how well this theory goes into practice...

This is my way of thinking too Captain.
For those arguing we should have taken McKenzie at 26, I disagree.
Perhaps if we'd missed Riewoldt at 13 and took a midfielder(Hislop?) but this was not the case.
Riewoldt can play defence or forward. Flexibility is the key.

Our midfield needs strengthening just as much if not more than the defence in light of the Polak deal.
To get a couple of talented kids in the midfield was required just as urgently. The fact that we got two who were touted by many as potential first rounders is fantastic.

Yes, a pretty good draft.

Any danger in looking at genuine tall key backs.

Craig I can understand your angst ,but all I can say at this stage is, I would be takin a 180 cm guy who can mark, kick, run rather then a 195cm guy who is shocked to find the sherrin is made of leather ;)

I am rapt an thats not just been a brightsider, had the pleasure of seeing extended footage of the draftees today an am simply amazed Connors wasnt a top 20 Gun Gun Gun that is what the new boy is and if he is only 183 I will go he,has to be 186,Petterson will not play at Telstra due to the fact he will hit his head on the roof his leap is amazing can high jump 205 :o.

I must say like Craig has said another tall would have been nice but I wouldnt take a risk on a tall with the quality of mids we have picked late.

CC what was the lunch you went to yesterday with all the footage?
