How many game plans does Terry "Sorta" Wallace have?

This year Wallace has used about 12 different game plans. Did he run out of options in his old bag of tricks and delve into the archives? Did he think " I just sorta thought we needed something different but proven"?

The one against the Blueboys was vintage Richmond....... one created by supercoach Hafey and perfected in the 1980 grandfinal by TJ.  Simple stuff really....... tackle hard, get the ball, no finessin', kick it long and contest.

Check out our forward set-up and compare it to 1980.

Schulz = Roach
Stafford = Cloke
Richo = Jess
Krak = Bartlett

One question........ why did it take until round 20 to use this game plan?

Certainly helps when the big men are all on deck.
If Schulz and Richo start to get their act together next season and add Hughes or limbach and a fit Brown next year the forward line looks quite imposing.

On Club Corner I see Staff said he'd be sitting down with the club at the end of the year to discuss his future as well. So he's not absolutely retiring yet. :spin
I'm sure you'll be happto know that mb. :hihi

That's too simple CJ2M, but sadly accurate :(

The good part is that Sarge has come a long way in the last few weeks. The real dilemma is Stafford......  his last couple of weeks have been very good but prior to that he was a certainty to finish this year.

The game against Carlton showed the need for a variety of gameplans.

Early, when the Carlton defenders went 1-on-1 with the Tiger forwards, the opportunity was there for the Tiger midfield to go long into the goalsquare.

As the game progressed, Carlton dropped extra players into defence. This meant the Tiger midfield had to work the ball through running short passes onto leading Tiger forwards.

The game varied again when Carlton tried to go into attack, allowing the Tiges to bomb it long into their forward line again.

The point is that a successful team needs to have a few variations on its gameplans to meet the individual circumstances, and sub-plots, of each game.
Top teams can adapt to gain advantage during a game.
Good to see the Tiges progressing in this direction.

PS: With the beard, isn't Schulzy looking more & more like a young Jimmy Jess?

Absolutley agree. As if one or three game plans can steer you right through a year or even a game! Variations on a theme ..........................................

Because the the skill level of the team has been slowly improving during the course of the season and some of the younger players have now had a good run over the bulk of the season.  Players like Raines and Foley showed that they are much surer now of themselves than they were three months ago.

The discipline level has also increased.  Krakouer was in position to crumb every time the ball went in, not just occasionally as he has tended to do.

My view is that Wallace will use the chip and grind game plans less and less often in the future.  He has used defensive tempo football to lift the confidence of the youngsters, give them simple instructions to follow and to keep opposition coaches honest.  What will they do about the Bowdens?  Pay them no respect and they will play keepings off for ages and frustrate the crap out of a team wanting to win.  If they double team Richo , then we will bring the ball in methodically through other players like Pettifer and Tambling, as they did in the middle part of the season.

Much like Adelaide did in the second half of last season, Wallace now has the confidence to let his players loose.   He has taken advantage of a couple of dead rubbers to practice a more attacking style, now that he is confident that the players are able to hit targets, follow instructions and control the game.

Well said Phanto.

I think Sarge is a reincarnation of "the Ghost".

Probably because Carlton's backline is *smile*. They lack decent quality talls down there & we were able to exploit it with this style of play.

I agree. I think Wallace sacrificed "attractive footy" to get wins with the limited skills/experience at his disposal. Otherwise too many 100 point floggings would have killed off these kids confidence. Who cares about our percentage, the great thing is we have won 50% of our games and morale is strong. Imagine the attitude we will take into next pre-season if we can knock over Essendon and play well against the Eagles.
