I read in todays Sun that Geisch has come up with a real beauty this time. :bash

The idea is this for the upcoming Sinners v Doggies game at Princes Park.  There are going to be 3 field umpires, 4 boundary umpires and 2 goal umpires thats a total of 9 umpires all are able to pay free kicks.
The boundary umpires and goal umpires will perform their traditional roles and be able to make decisions within 20metres range.
In my opinion this is *smile* crazy. All we need is more umpires needing to make decisions to justify why theyre out there.
I think Geisch must have seen his first NFL game in USA and thought hey I'll claim its another great idea.
Someone has to put a leash on the Geisch.

Jeff Geischen - Empire builder.

AFL footy - the last great bastion of socialism.

Where they pay 3 people to do, what 1 used to do for less.

1 for each player. :P

No seriously, I think there should be only a couple.

Although the more you have the more interpretation there is, the more stuff ups.

Go back to 1.

Don't mind them trialling this system.
If the maggots are properly trained then I'm happy for the boundary and goal umpies to call on the dodgy crap that the corridor idiots can't see.
Maybe then we can go back to two midfield umpires instead of trying to push it up to four.
Less stupid maggots on the ground getting in the players way and filling holes on the ground. Time to restrict the runners and water boys a bit more too as there are so many people running around the middle of the ground nowadays it's busier than Bourke st in peak hour.

Yet another Americanism creeping in to our game.

I can't wait for the birth of Aussie Rules Disco umpires. You know, like in NFL, Basketball or Baseball, where every decision is punctuated by wild gesticulating and exaggerated body movements and gestures, along with Michael Jackson style dancing.

I believe the greatest living exponent of this was Lt Frank Drebin.

We already have them, they are called Goal Umpires! :hihi

If your goal umpires and boundary umpires are properly trained - we may infact be able to reduce the number of umpires. Goal umpires could umpire the 20 metre area in front of them. Boundary umps all the outside plays (might need 2 boundary umps each side though) and one/two central umpire controlling the game.

I for one would be happy to have goal umpires having a role because they would be privvy to who is actually initiating the holding/scragging over a course of a game and IMO Richo would get a lot more frees.

Happens in soccer, bigger ground with footy but could make it work. May be more consistency - If one central umpire sets the tone with his interpretation on the day - perhaps less likely to have varying interpretations all over the ground - perhaps not. I think its worth a try.

( UMPIES PAYIN FREE KICKS?
DEPENDS WHICH TEAM YA FOLLOW EH! ;D ;D

This is flamin funny I reckon....... ;D

How many umpies does it take to pay a free kick? ::)

1 to blow the whistle and 8 to fight over it! ;D

Or to have a raffle... ;D

Or to play cards and have free kicks as the jokers...... ;D

My basic formula is that the more umpires you have the more free kicks get paid. No matter how you look at it. I personally want to see LESS free kicks paid.

Why pay any at all?
Maybe we should just have all in wrestlemania from one end of the ground to the other. We could have a couple of evil masked waterboys to slip in a few sneaky sly ones occasionally and for some real excitement the coaching panel or maybe the Prez could jump the fence and get involved as well.
Damn got the old deja vu feeling coming over me.

completely agree. the average amount of frees per game last year was around 39. thats way to high. 2 umpires is about the right number... the less umpires, the less different interpretations you have

Personally I have wondered why boundary and goal umpires haven't been able to adjudicate on decisions. When you think about it it's farcical that one of them can see a blatant infringement but not be able to do anything about it. I agree with other posts that if we allow the boundary and goal umpires to adjudicate then we won't need so many field umpires.
