How the eight has devalued finals

Interesting perspective on how the eight has devalued what it takes to make finals. In 1966 when we finished fifth and just missed out on the finals (making us cherry ripe for a glorious 1967) we finished with a win ratio of 75% (13 wins and a draw out of 18) and a percentage of 123.18%. How would we like those numbers now!!!

I guess when half the teams can make the finals you are going to get a few average teams making it every year......shows how bad we have been over the past 27 years that we have only 2 finishes in the top half of the competition to hang our hats on.

That's because there were less teams in the comp back then.
Final four out of twelve teams means about the best 33.33333333% of the competition makes the finals.
Final eight out of sixteen teams means nearly everyone gets a finals match.
There should be only six teams in the finals maximum, even after they bring in the new franchises.

I agree with 6 teams. This would be a fair representation of the best teams for the season. I guess with only 6 teams making finals the tanking game would be even worse.

More finals mean that kids who play in the teams that finish 6th, 7th and 8th after the Home and Away season get a taste of finals footy - the crowds, the expectations and the up tempo of AFL finals footy. And it is a different game to the H & A games.

For this reason and this reason alone I was hoping our kids got a taste of September action this year - not to be - maybe next year.

I like the 8 simply because it helps footballers develop.

IMO Hawthorn next year will be a far superior side to the one this year because they will have had finals experience.

I agree in an ideal world, 8 out 16 is too many for a finals series. With the draw being unequal , however, I guess you could argue that it allows a buffer zone for teams with tougher draws to still have a chance of playing finals.

Dunno, the first week of finals generally seem poorly attended these days. Seem to remember the Kangas and Port playing to low 20,000's.

Yep, seems far too many AFL decisions are made these days purely for the $$$$$ rather than the good of the game.
