How the hell are we supposed to compete with this?

No team should have to travel to 2 consecutive interstate away games (as we do April 15 and 22)

All non-victorian teams do this "2 consective interstate away games" most years.

In fact other than having another market to source revenue from - what other "advantages" do the non-victorian teams have? They travel twice as much each season than every Victorian club - 10 to 11 times as compared to 5 times.

The non AFL states have had financial benefits to promote the game in their state, to entice AFL players to their cities - and with Australian Rules now being introduced into some schools in both NSW and Qld they are making in-roads into traditional Rugby domains.

As far as putting talent on the ground the non-victorian teams draw from the same talent poole as the Victorian teams - maybe they have better football departments!

Nah I think Victorians need an excuse to hang their hat on as to why they are poor performing - the real problem is that the Victorian clubs are still being run on the basis of a tribal competition whereas the interstate clubs are run like a business.

Until the Victorian clubs shed their dinosaur managements with their tired way of running football departments they will always be a close 2nd to the interstate clubs (with the exception of Freo which has a hangover of running an AFL club like they use to run a WAFL club).

The one reason why I have faith in a Tiger revival is that there has been a new broom put through our football department over the last season and with a strong leader in Miller who with Wallace will dictate what has to be done and then will make sure it gets done!

I - in your opinion am deluded because I am one of the Tiger supporters who believe that over the next decade the Tigers will rise to a level of being a regular strong contender for the flag - a foundation is being laid and then through astute list managment that foundation will be built upon and changed each year to keep us at or near the top of the ladder.

IMO Interstate teams have raised the bar on how to approach an AFL season to win a flag - and their Victorian counterparts have not been able to rise to that level YET!

Stop looking for excuses and start realising what has to be done in the 21st century to win a flag!

Spot on t12. The RFC is our heart and sole and we have to do all we can to see it's managed well enough to be around forever.

I look forward to reading about the proposed merger.

IF richmond were smart they'd fly directly to Brisbane from Perth.

I see these two games as a positive - Get them out of the way early.

If we are good enough, we'll win them.

Decent players and shrewd list management wins premierships, not members. Sure a bit of charity helps, Brisbane,  Port etc but having a truck load of members hasn’t helped Fremantle much and being broke and having no members didn’t hurt the Roo’s in the 90’s.

For the Tiger’s to ‘compete with this’ they need to have a realistic assessment of where our list is at, (which I think has been done) and set realistic goals about developing a premiership side. Once we start winning consistently the sponsors, additional members and money will come.

Well said Mr Remote. Enough already with sooky Victorians who cant cope with warm climates or airplane flights!! :hihi :hihi :hihi

fair enuff...but what of the BRISPAIN LIARS?
concession-riddled cheats who shot up SALINE at half time.....but I like Port Adelaide less......they are so full of emselves...they actually CONNED themselves into thinking they can actually play footy.....tredrea,s pretty good though............. :-X

Do we want the AFL to become like the English Premier League or similar Soccer leagues around the world?

Only the ones with ton's of cash are at the top of the tables,..e.g. Chelsea, Man United, Juventus etc and they will stay there because they have huge followings and therefore enormous resources.

Let's look at who is always at the top of our competition:

Brisbane, Sydney, Adelaide, Stkilda (only recently), West Coast, Port Adelaide, (Essendon and Collingwood of late, and Carlton in the 80's and 90's)

The Saints are there but only because of the draft it could strongly be argued.

Look who occupies the other positions.

Does anybody really think these teams will be toppled from their spots?
In fact look at the lions they are in a rebuilding phase but they still only just missed the finals last year.

I am not arguing that cash, resources etc dictate ladder positions/success but it is quite clear that with great fiscal foundations the "have nots" are at an enormously disadvantageous position.

It is time to even the competition up firstly with a decent fixture/draw!

Rosy, the RFC is our heart and soul, but South Melbourne and Fitzroy members/supporters also believed their clubs to be their heart and soul. Look what happened there. Yes, the AFL keep saying they are committed to 12 Victorian clubs, but can you trust them?? They also murmur about another Qld. team and another in NSW. If this was to happen, would our heart and soul love of the Tigers save us. I think not. Let us all hope and pray the proposed Richmond/Melbourne/North Melbourne scenario never raises it's ugly head ever again.

You make a very good point graystar;
Yes Rosy, the RFC is YOUR heart and soul, yet to me, the MFC is MY heart and soul.
You'd prefer to see Melbourne relocated or merged, and I'd prefer to see Richmond bugger off if it mean't Melbourne were here to stay.
This sort of thread shows how illogical football supporting really is. Its only by fluke that I go for Melbourne and any of you go for Richmond. We could have been born into Essendon or Collingwood families; we could have been persuaded by a Hawthorn supporting Uncle at the age of three through $5 and lollies.
The fact of the matter is, whatever you think about your love for Richmond, there is your equivelant for every single club in the AFL.

Save Victorian footy by either cutting the crap (Nth Melb, St Kilda, Hawthorn and Melbourne) or rolling it into one big log.
Hawthorn and St. Kilda both had higher memberships than Richmond this year.
Either replace the one of them with Richmond under the 'crap' catagory, or keep ridiculous, unsubstantiated opinions like that to yourself.

That's if we base it on memberships. I however base it on the fact if they aren't RFC they ARE :hihi crap!!!!!

After being appromately $6 down when I started volunteering there, Melbourne will be debt free by 2007/8 (Its more specific than that, I just can't remember which year).
Reported in today's Age that Melbourne's debt has been reduced from $5.4 million to $3.07m over the past two years. Some of these funds came from the Competitive Balance Fund but it doesn't matter where you get the cash, retiring debt is a move in the right direction.

Meanwhile we are saddling ourselves with more and more debt. :bash

It can turn any time. Stay tuned for a very interesting thread I propose to start soon following receipt of some very interesting original documents regarding OPERATION ALLOY - the prosed merger of Melbourne, Richmond, and North Melbourne in 1993 - yes, that's right - RICHMOND!! The entity was to be known as the Melbourne North Tigers.

We, as Richmond supporters must ensure that our club is never, ever, in a position to contemplate losing its identity.

Gee, perhaps also the design for the proposed Richmond/Melbourne merged club jumper (which was "apparently" locked away in a filing cabinet at Punt Road 'bout 18 years ago) will also see the light of day?
Any truth in all of these revelations will probably create a bit of a ruckus and possibly harm the reputations of a few of the people involved, but there is one thing I would like to see come from it.

If there was a jumper designed for the about to be merged entity it should be MANUFACTURED, FRAMED AND MOUNTED IN THE MIDDLE OF OUR BOARD ROOM TABLE. Just to remind the present and any future directors of the consequences of their actions in running OUR footy club.

and maybe we could all wear the Jumper for Heritage round
