PUNT ROAD END | Richmond Tigers Forum

"Fremantle Football Club membership surged past the 30,000 mark as at 5:00pm Wednesday 21 December with membership now standing at 30,082 which is more than 1,400 members higher than at the same time last year.........."

No doubt West Coast, Adelaide, Port, Brisbane and Sydney will have similar numbers and truck loads of cash as a result.

With 9 other clubs to compete with in Victoria it is a case of the rich getting richer (Collingwood/Essendon) and the poor getting poorer (North/Footscray/Melbourne).
Lack of success has an enormous snowball effect as evidenced by our money situation since the mid 80's.

Even with the $780 million from the TV rights that will help fund AFL for the next 6 years, there are still huge inequalities in our competition including the draw, game venues, the tribunal, priority draft picks (now gone) etc, etc, that make our competition a complete joke at times.

Unless the non-victorian teams are complete basket cases, they will always occupy at least 4-6 positions in the top 8.
Since their introduction in 1987 with Brisbane and WC as the first 2 teams not from Victoria, 1987 and 1989 are the only seasons that finalists have not included 1 or more teams from outside Victoria.
As a national competition this should be good for all teams with more exposure on TV and media, and more money for everyone in the AFL.
However, the struggling clubs continue to struggle year in year out and need to be propped up by the competitive balance fund.
So is this how the competition is evened out, simply by paying out teams debts from the "common fund?"

If our "off field" leaders can't get their act together and promote our club and lobby the AFL so that our draw/fixture is at least "fair" we have no hope of creating a new Tiger dynasty. Since the introduction of interstate teams we have made it to 2 finals series and when it was all said and done were never in a position to go all the way. And while the AFL can't be held totally responsible for our predicament, it's preoccupation with promoting the game everywhere else in Australia except in Victorian schools has only added to Victorian Footballs woes and Richmond's.

Memo to Richmond Football Club Board and the AFL:

Our home is the MCG, not the Telstra Dome. That means 11 home games at the MCG.
We are a huge drawing crowd, stop giving Collingwood and Essendon Anzac Day games and all the Friday night matches
Stop Eddie McGuire dictating Collingwood fixtures etc
Victoria cannot support 10 teams. Merge or relocate the struggling sides that cannot stand on their own feet.
Stop giving interstate teams 12/13 home games (Brisbane/Sydney)
Stop giving interstate teams financial advantages
No team should have to travel to 2 consecutive interstate away games (as we do April 15 and 22)
Make the draw fairer
And lastly STOP CHANGING THE BLOODY RULES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
