How the VFL lags behind other states.

While we in Victoria scratch our heads looking for replacement options to our senior teams but are frustrated by the fact that our local state-based competition, the VFL, hasn't even got out of bed yet, other state based comps are in full swing.

The WAFL has already played 3 rounds of footy. This is a clear reason why the Weagles were able to swing 5 changes to their team to gain match practiced players in their upset win against Port.

Atop of that, in WA, if a prospective AFL player can't get a WAFL game because of a bye, he is given a game in an alternative team's reserves.
We saw this last week Josh Kennedy's East Freo have a bye, so he got a game with Perth reserves.
The previous week, Matt *smile*'s Claremont had a bye, so he got a run in an alternative teams reserves.
Could we do that in the AFL/VFL?
Moreso, could we bring ourselves to do that, especially for other AFL clubs in the VFL?

In the SANFL, they've already played 2 games.

The QFL has already played a round. Same with the NSW/ACT.

Even Tassie is aleady off the mark.

And when does the VFL begin?

Well, hopefully by September.

(Well there's one footy organisation that needs a big kick up the backside.)

No. Our VFL teams are largely operated by the respective AFL clubs, or at the least, have a large say in what goes on.

Does anyone expect if Coburg has a bye for Micky Malthouse to agree to running with a returning Richmond player in the Pie reserves, just to help us out?

Nice idea in theory Phanto, but completely unrealistic.

Not making the suggestion to do so.

Just pointing out the advantages that the WAFL provides over the VFL.

TAC Cup has begun.

When do the VFL begin?

^ Your other points I agree with 100%, was only the 'loaning' of players that I think is unworkable mate.

It's different when you have 10 AFL sides, all participating in the VFL in some fashion in comparison to the 1/2 team per state sides.

Perhaps loaning players to non-AFL affiliated VFL club's reserves could work. Probably only under special circumstances though.

There's got to be some drawbacks for being he football capital of Australia. This is one of them

I find it astounding, staggering and ridiculous that the VFL is 2 weeks behind the AFL draw. What a disadvantage to those who missed a game in round 1 who have to play a practice match and not in a real competition and then go out and compete in the best competition in the country ala Polo, King, Graham, Nahas.
Defies logic...
Also the 12/10 rule should not apply. Richmond will see Vickery, Putt, Post, regularly in Coburg 2nds. Whats that doing for their development ??
