How to play the doggies with no ruckman

No Simmo, no Staff and the Knob still injured.  What to do?  here's my 2c.

Play sarge FF and Patto CHF.
Patto takes the centre bounces and then goes to CHF
Richo starts CHF but as soon as Patto's done with the centre bounce, Richo takes on Simmos role as the mobile big man round the ground.  He can take boundary throw ins and round the ground bounces - with a bit of help from Tucky as 3rd man up. When Richo needs a spell, he is relieved by Razor who comes off the bench.  This assumes Gas is playing because we don't need tall defenders against the doggies and Razor can play off the bench relieving Richo in the ruck and occasionally Patto at CHF.

Thoughts?

Thought round 2 v StKilda was a good example of how to play the Bullies.

Keep it tight, man to man, & stop their ruuning & open spaces.
They like running through the centre, so have to have numbers there.

They rely very heavily on West's clearances. Johnson must sit on him.

Spot on Phanto.

If they put that same pressure on the doggies like melbourne did last weekend then we may have a shot

Not too sure Phanto.
Doggies are a lot quicker than the saints who IMO are slow.
I agree on West - Sugar must tag him and keep him under 20 possies.  If he can do this it may open up the clearances for Foley.

TW should see that this is an opportunity to experiment to his heart's content.

Pattison could run in the ruck, with support from Hall, Schulz and Richo.  Maybe give McGuane a couple of quarters.

Moore could be matched up on one of the Doggies better players (like Johnson) so TW can work out if he is wasting his time with Moore once and for all.

One of Patrick Bowden or Hall should play forward to support Richo and Schulz.

Joel Bowden should be freed up to play loose again, if possible.

Polo, Foley and co should play in the centre square again, tagging West and Cross.  They will learn an enormous amount about working together and supporting each other.

Oakley-Nicholls should take Raines' spot if he is suspended.  Let him and White try to match the Bullies forwards for speed to learn about real hard running.

Tambling should be taken out of the forward line and matched up with Eagleton- ditto!  Make him run both ways for a change.  The physical challenge won't be too great but he will look really silly if he tries to bludge.

Deledio should go head to head with Griffin- give us a preview of AFL finals circa 2010.

They will probably kill us but who cares?  It is more important to keep developing these players than it is to win this game.  Let the kids loose to run around and show us what they have.

Oh, and move Chaffey to left back (on the bus).  He came back last week to do a couple of nice things and miss a few targets, another classic game.  No more.

Nice one, TOT.

I'd still put Johnson on West. 2 old fellas running together.

The rest is excellent.

If that was true I would actually be excited about this weeks game.

Win or lose I would like to see that from a spectators viewpoint.

Would rather get beat 25 gaols to 18 then 11 to 7.

Results are useless now, let's play the way we want to play in the future, not the way that will stop the bleeding.

I'm pretty sure Moore will be out injured again if it's a groin injury but I do agree that we should try to experiment.
Heck with all the injuries and suspensions ATM we have no choice!

If we were to win this weekend it would be a victory for the ages but I think we'll get mauled.

I think just for entree we should start with the basics and that is every man being accountable for their opponent.

I'm still having nightmares about a fella called Gram running off the HB line and kicking goals willy nilly, I've been waking up in a sweat and always miss out who Gram's opponent was.

Accountability!

I missed his first opponent- he was on him for only a few minutes, whoever it was, but one of my favourites, young Mr Tambling played on him at different times during the game ( third goal at least)-hence my previous post regarding Eagleton and bludging. Tambling will be a gun but he needs to develop his defensive side or players like Gram will keep doing things like that.

Who was on Montagna- he was even worse?

Gram was by himself for the first 2, on Deledio for the 3rd and by himself again for the 4th. So really his opponent was who ever our spare man in defence was.

I hear what you say Checkside, however do you really think our coach left Gram on his own after kicking those goals in the first quarter? TW would have sent out the runner (I hope it wasn't Johnson because he's probably still running out there) and given the message to tighten up, whether it was an assigned player of the spare man in defence. Poor accountability if you ask me.

I find the players guilty and not TW in this case. Who was the leader/s in defence, didn't anyone gerry on what was happening?

The question should be raised, what sort of leadership skills were being displayed out there?

Anyway, we can't blame Sugar because he was doing a good tagging job and he had his hands full hah!

I could have sworn I saw him scoot away from Tambling to kick his third goal and then the two of them set up on each other for the next bounce and Tambling ran with him for the next few minutes.  I suspect you are right about the first two goals though.

I'm surprised that teams don't hurt the spare man in defence like this more often.  It is an obvious thing to set the extra player up on the opposite wing, running forward to kick goals, esp if a team like Richmond is trying to get two spare men down back, as they often do.  In the games where we have done well, Patrick Bowden has run forward to kick the odd goal, as has Kellaway when freed up across half back.  They have all been bludging in defence over the last few weeks though.

Tambling and Rodan were both trying to take him back to the goal square but he wouldnt go, so they both were on him for a while.

Street and minson will have a picnic this weeking. Poor patto. If he feels like a witches hat at the moment, he'll feel like a concrete slap during the game.

Oh the pain. :(

Nah PAtto will be ok ppl...can run all day and will give a contest... :)

PLay Patto and Ray Hall (lord above) on the ball and leave Richo and Sarge up front...have to keep those big boys forward as the doggies only weakness is a small backline...bring in Cleve!!!!!! Get pat bowden forward and leave pettifer up there aswell...must stretch them.

I have bad feelings about this week....if raines goes who the heck will get johnson...its frightning.
