How to toughen up ?

Dermott brereton once laid a cheap shot on one of our boys [nothing unusual there] and brodders apparently told him to do so again would require a stretcher to leave the ground. boy wonder

apparently looked into brodders' eyes, realized HE WASNT JOKING and can be quoted as saying that it was one of the few times he genuinely feared for himself, and found himself taking his eyes of

the ball for the rest of the game

now I know this is just a golden boofhead we're talkin about, but he did play in a harder era IMO. that richmond team did walk a little taller with brodders and blind turner in their corner

The brain bender Bond must instill a TENACITY in our team that has been missing, as much , if not more than our skill set. this is our centenary year and all the marketing is about ' the tigers of old'.

Well' lets just hope it doesn't have the same hoodoo as cogs in 06 and the young guns in 07 ' and axel can be spared the ignominy. Do they get paid with our membership money for that crap?

TENACITY+PRIDE in the jumper make tackles stick, make opponents think twice before taking you on, make smart arses like Griffen shut his face from fear of the consequences.

It must be taken from the head/heart and translated to deeds on the field. Shame is, players like 'the tigers old' ., capt. blood, St. Francis et al, knew instinctively THATS what it took.

and didn't need a head mender to 'put them in the moment'. I personally don't want to see as many half arsed efforts as we have had to endure in recent history, stuff that makes you think

the players think we must be fools if we're going to buy the body language - I tried .....I tried really hard....I just coudn't do it ......reminiscent of an U/8's game.

Toughen up? they could hardly toughen down. Maybe they could all have a shot of jake 'the snake' blood before a game. Now theres a TIGER!

I don't want to get all darksided about this, but it has been a problem for a along time. I thought David King might have had an effect. He was an under-handed scrubber of a player. Famous for sitting on blokes after a tackle to make sure they stayed out of the next contest. The Glove was probably our last player to ever lead a tackling stat sheet. It seems such a fundamental of the game that it SHOULDN'T be something that even needs to be discussed at training sessions. When you tackle a bloke he stays tackled. Take him to ground. Push off him to right yourself and to make sure he stays down. If you see a team-mate about to get into trouble, don't hang off the back looking for a cheap handball, split the bloke who's putting him under pressure down the bloody middle. :veryupset The legitimate shirt-front is still a part of our game. Let's not get any more rugby players down to the club, let's sign up Byron Pickett!

Too late for the old guard but I thought putiing Foley and Newman in the VC roles this year sent a pretty clear message to the younger brigade.

Tough leaders are a good start.
