Bit confused over the new rule covering kicking out before the umpy has finished waving the flag after a point scored.

Up till now, the player has had to wait until the flag is finished being waved and no player is allowed within a certain radius of the goal square...10 metres....or thereabouts, I think.

Consider this scenario if you will. Team A is kicking for goal. Team B has a heap of players in the goal square. Team A player kicks a point and the umpire starts to wave the flag. A team B player grabs the ball and wants to kick it immediately. There are still players milling about the square, or close to it. So what does the player do?? Can he still kick it, or even handball it??

Would someone help me out here!!

He can kick in to a team mate if he wants, don't think he is allowed to just run off and play on or handball off to a teammate. Not sure if anyone will be allowed to try and smother his kick, but would think that he would basically be untouchable while he is kicking in.

Thank TM. What's the go with the no player within a certain radius??

Bit hard to leave that bit of the rule in as you would have opposition forwards running in all directions trying to get far enough away from the guy kicking in.
Think it would just be that the guy with the pill is untouchable till he has kicked it back in.

I think this new kicking in rule will be good. I dont think it will speed the game up as much as some people think.

Last season, how many times did the person kicking in the ball get a warning from the umpire to kick the ball in ?

I am who thinks we have a great game and to leave the rules as is. But this is one change I actually think is good. Why at times should a team be penalised, having to wait for the goal umpire to stop waiving his flags to be able to kick the ball in ?

Along with this original question , I also wonder how it works if one team scores a point, the opposition quickly grab the ball after the all clear, kick out but turn it over and the team quickly has another shot at goal.
So the Goal Umpire is getting his flags or waving the first point, does he drop his flags - race over to cover the second shot at goal , signal another score lets say a point - and then has to complete waving the first point, and then wave the second point ( or goal )  :o :o :o

Yeah could be a bit of fun for the goal umpy, he could still be waving catch up scores halfway through the quarter time huddle. Once the umpy signals a score its official, the flag waving is more so the ump at the other end the scoreboard and maybe the fans can keep an accurate update. Be a bit awkward if the two umpies and the scoreboard didn't match at games end.
Watch for four umpies coming to a game near you real soon.

I wish the goal umpires good luck though, for the first time they are going to have to do more than one thing at the one time. I don't think the ballerinas, sorry I meant prima donnas, can handle any more pressure. What with the dancing, the waving, the marking the score card at arms length in front of their face........I don't think they will be able to keep up without an extra fitness program.....twenty knee-highs four times a day!!

So funny and soooooooooo true. :rofl

If the ball gets kicked through for a point and ends up in the opposition cheer squad, then it may take longer than when the goal umpire waves his flag to come back, and I'm sure that it won't go staright back to the "full back"! :P

Apparently there are to be extra footballs stationed behind the goal umpire at each end. Haven't yet received our copy of the laws for amateurs this year; there is no way we can afford more than two new match balls per home game, so I suppose for most times a behind is scored there will be no difference to the old rules in the amateur game.

If there is to be any increase in umps TM, I would rather see 4 boundary umpires. This would also help speed the game up somewhat, as the pill would be back in play a lot quicker.
