Hughes a waste at Coburg

So Post could do with a taste? Didn't you vehemently oppose my suggestion last week that Vickery should get a gig? Why the difference?

Leysy's reasoning for giving Post a 3 match or so taste ahead of Vickery.

1) Post is a much larger specimen who also had an extra year as an overage player in the under 18's last season.

2) He can play 2nd/3rd tall up forward or play off half back so the club can choose "easier" opponents & easier positions on the ground to play.

3) He wont be spending any time crashing up against blokes in the ruck like a 104kg Cox, a 103kg Gardiner or a 103 kg Moran over the next few weeks.

& could you point out where leysy "vehemently" opposed Vickery "getting a gig". All leysy correctly pointed out was that talls take more time to develop than smaller players.

If his form warrants a taste & the club believes he's ready that's fine. So long as they protect him as much as possible on the field. If he doesn't get many (or any) games this year thats no big deal as there's plenty of time for him for a 200cm player to continue to develop towards making his mark.

Most of the teams that develop there talls well dont rush them. Why should we.

Tend to agree Leysy.

Of Vickery, Post & Gourdis I would only think Post is able to have a seniors birth.

He's a nice size, the players have been impressed with how much he has put on in the gym since he arrived at the club., I've heard he is very professional too.

A few weeks ago I would have said he is not ready, but since then each game he plays he shows a lot more development. The more I see him the happier I get, could be the type to really blossom when given a break.

My only remaining concern is him controlling his kicking (he tends to kick high up and unders in the general direction of play) more at a higher level with a faster pace/more pressure. It hasn't been too bad last couple of games and it could be all about playing him in the right position.

Certainly the only one i would consider of the young/raw talls being promoted right now.

In regards to your 3 points:
Post is ( according to stats) 194cm and 84 kgs and Vickery is 200cm and 90kg. But Post is the larger specimen?

Post has played an extra season of under 18's and that makes him more ready how? Post has been up and down between the Coburg 2nds and firsts, Vickery has played all games in the firsts since rd 1.

Vickery is more than capable of playing the 2nd/3rd forward, he doesn't have to play in the ruck. Though having said that he has been up against the likes of Chris Bryan (100kgs), Tom Bellchambers (100kgs), Brent Renouf (95kgs), Trent West (102kgs), Tristen Cartledge (95kgs) whilst playing VFL. Not exactly Dean Cox but all big bodied men, not some weedy boys that people seem to think permeate the VFL ruck stocks.

Anyway, it's a moot point for this week as I have the tip that neither are playing for RFC.... this week.

And in regards to the question "why should we' rush our young talls the answer is 2 fold. We have 2 wins for the season so we can start their development now, not in 2010. Secondly I see Melbourne has started theirs with Jack Watts and the tip is West coast are going to debut Natanui so it seems other clubs are doing it.

And I apologise for claiming you vehemently opposed me on Vickery.

On what basis would you select him for the seniors? Proven form at Coburg, or wishful thinking?

I'd play him on the basis that, hears your chance cleaver take it or your gone at the end of the year old son, show us what youve got and that you want it. If not a career at Glenelg beckons.

it appears your tip is wrong.
funny but i would have thought their development might have already started, but no i guess your right, coburg is just a bit of a kick and a giggle.
but hey if melb and the weagles are rushing their kids so should we.
ess and nth werent afraid to throw gumby and hansen straight in and its paying off for them bigtime now.

Posty was weighed in at 88kgs before the season started, and has put on extra weight since then. I can't remember who was telling me, but has put on 5-6kgs in the gym or something like that. His upper body appears bigger than Vickery I think, but that could be because Vickers is a bit taller and has narrower shoulders.

That was me and he has, Thomson was telling me all the boys thought he was a freak with how much he has put on this year and is very professional for such a young kid.

well said maisey i think claw agrees with the logic.

post should have been given a game after the preseason looked just fine even back then. it would be criminal if he doesnt get at least 5 games into him this yr. 3 games or so as you say now and lets say the last 3 or so to see the season out.

i know you havent seen much of coburg but reports say gourdis is improving rapidly i know his kicking is poor but hes another good size a game or three surely wouldnt hurt him either.
lets give them the encouragement and reward for the hard work put in this yr, and the games they get will be a huge experience and investment in the future it will give them an idea of what is required.

on post have picked him to play most weeks as the third tall roaming around the hf line.

the thing i would like to see done to take pressure of both post and jack when they play is have a mature big body inthe forward line with them. ive sort of targeted schulz to play from the goal square for this role in the absence of richo. it not only helps the young talls but makes for good overall structure.

Only problem with Gourdis is he's a rookie. I don't know how we can drop someone to long term injury, especially with Kane Johnson retiring. I think Nahas will stay on the senior list with the rule change, but can we get a 2nd rookie up onto the senior list to allow him to play?

I think Richo might be on the LTIL, but he'd be the only one "qualified".

Would it be wrong to wish for a player to be on the LTIL cause they're a dud?

Nice to meet you Brodders, I'll elaborate for you. I meant that its a good time to commence their AFL development ie playing AFL footy. I never inferred VFL was kick and and giggle in fact on another thread I was commenting on how, generally, VFL players aren't weedy little kids but full bodied men.

I illustrated how other clubs with no finals aspirations were commencing the blooding of their talls and there was no reason we shouldn't, can't see anything wrong with that. So what does Gumbleton being injury prone have to do with anything? Are you saying that because he was playing AFL early it has caused his injury? Based on what? If so how do you explain Robbie Tarrant getting injured all the time playing VFL and its reserves? Talls (and smalls) get injured playing any level of footy.

I agree with this logic. Schulz or Patto should be there to crash the packs and take pressure off the younger players. Personally I prefer Schulz to Patto simply because he is a better mark and kick although Patto has a better work rate.

I've heard that big vic is lucky he's not playn in the coburg reserves the only reason he's not is cos ppl would be asking the questions about why we picked him up .

oops 8)

Hughes a waste of space at Coburg.

Is that cos on recent form hes stopping a kid from West Heidelberg or Bulleen from getting a run with the Coburg seconds ;D
