I've looked up and down and no-one seems to have started a tribute thread (if someone has please feel free to delete this one). Anyhow Ian Major has died suddenly after being admitted to hospital (apparently he had suffered for years from non-Hodgkinson's lymphoma). Coupled with Jack Dyer they formed what was the legendary 'Capt and the Major' football commentary team at 3KZ. Sad to see him go but a great legacy all the same and I'm sure Capt Blood has given him a hearty welcome in heaven. Rest In Peace 'The Major'.

Surprised this didn't get more publicity. Have happy memories of listening to the Captain and the Major during my formative years of following footy.

"3KZ is football!"

R.I.P.

Yep another tie to my days as a footy mad kid departs.

RIP IAN MAJOR.

The Captain and the Major great commenrtary - Dyers witticisms, knowledge and vision with Majors description and accuracy great combination.

The glory days of the VFL.

These days were the best, maybe i see it that way as i was a lil kid with no life pressures but the footy was better and it was more of a lifestyle than today going to the footy listening to the likes of Major or Smokey Dawson or Beitzel and Lahiff etc etc and keeping an eye on scores around the grounds on the scoreboard trying to work out who was A and B or K and L as all games were on Saturdays until the Swans left having a kick on the ground afterwards then racing homt to catch Big League replay.

Best wishes to the family and another link to the glory years has left us.

RIP Ian Major.

Sad news. One of the things I remember from growing up in Melbourne was listening to the footy on the radio and the "3KZ is football" line.

Does 3KZ still exist and do they still broadcast footy or have they been pushed out by the likes of MMM, AW etc?

RIP Major. Always great to hear the Captain and the Major with Dyer's funny quotes.

3KZ moved from AM to FM band and has become what's now known as GOLD-FM (60's - 80's music).

ah, the Captain and the Major. Great memories of listening to the two of them in the backyard. Running around with a footy trying to emulate what they were calling.

R.I.P. Mr Major.

A very big part of my growing up was listening to the Captain & the Major call Saturday avo Tiger games on 3KZ. These guys were a brilliant calling team.

I had the loungeroom to myself, some rolled up footy socks for an indoor footy, kicking goals with Roachy, tapping the ball down from the General to the Flea. Running around going nuts every time the Tigers kicked a goal.

I even reluctantly turned the radio off for two minutes to see if that would change the momentum of the game when we were getting pumped...mmmm I still can't understand why that didnt work!

I can still hear these guys call the game in my mind today...very sad that both these men have passed on.

RIP Major

3KZ....IS FOOTBALL!

Listening to the Captain and the Major was a big part of my childhood and I have fond memories of listening to the two of them call the game. I always felt for Ian Major trying to keep Jack under control some times. It is football's loss that the once great calling team are no longer with us.

I used to have the corridor to myself with the front door as one goal and the bathroom door as the other, kicking my dad's big woollen socks around pretending to be Rainesy. ;D

RIP Ian Major.

Must admit I was more partial to Harry Bietzel and Bill Jacobs on 3AW. But I do recall one memorable call from the Captain and the Major. Season 1977, Richmond v Hawthorn at the MCG. Jimmy Jess was playing one of his early games and came on and kicked 3 late last quarter goals to see us get up from behind. Would love to hear that again; particularly for Jack Dyer's "unbiased" commentary. (Fair dinkum, he just about jumped out of the box, good old Jack!).

This is sad news.

As many posters have mentioned, i also have fond memories of walking around the cherry orchard, or along the aquaduct near our propertyt, or laying under the giant oak trees surrounding an old barn that hadn't been used for the last 50 years, and listening to the Captain and the Major - i guess it helps when your team is right up there at the time.

Can still remember their opening jingle:

"The crowds are roaring, the big men jump"
"Push in the back - Aw come'on ump"
"Ian Major and Captain Blood"
"For footy we're way ahead - Melbourne 3KZ"

It certainly beat the hell out of listening to the 2 horse racing stations give broken coverage of he footy 3DB and 3UZ

You'd have the most important prt of the game unfolding and suddenly they'd cross to where ever and the horses wouldnt even be in the barriers yet. You'd listen to 5 minutes of comentary about a horse walking backwards with 4 stewards pressing themselves against it's hind quarters - riveting stuff!
