Idea to fix tanking

Sides that finish outside the eight go into a lottery for the first eight picks.
Finalists pick their first rounders in normal finishing order.
Sides that finish on four wins or less get a PP at the start of the second draft round.
Then second round draft picks in normal order.
No double dipping before the first round by having an early priority if you have two ( manufactured ) *smile* years.
Sides finishing at the bottom of the ladder will still get three picks in the top twenty to help their rebuilding.
Sides trying to win at the fringe of finals contention can possibly receive an elite kid who may just be enough to tip them into the eight.
There's less incentive to just kill off a season for the bottom teams the possibility of picks 7-17-20 while still helpfull for rebuilding would be nowhere near as attractive as maybe 1-3- 20 depending on what clubs get PP's or lottery bonus.

Nah - law of the jungle for me -

Get rid of the draft - waste of time and has brought the game into disrepute.

Get rid of the salary cap - restraint of trade and stops footballers who only h

if that happened north, footscray, melbourne, port adelaide to name a few would be gone in 5 years.

Great - add
Geelong - earlier this decade
St Kilda - propped up by TV Money
Richmond - early 1990s
Hawthorn - before Kennett took over

That would leave two Victorian clubs - Essendon and Collingwood - which is about right. The rest can go back to the VFL where they belong.

The AFL competition would then be won by the club that has the most money to afford the players to take them to a premiership. This system worked right up until the end of the 1970s - interestingly Richmond won 9 of its 10 premierships under that system. A premiership on average every 7 to 8 years. Under the current system we have won 1 premiership (1980) in 29 years.

I know outside the poor cards dealt to us by the AFL we have caused a lot of our own problems - that is another reason why we should be a VFL club - our administration has proven it is not up to National competition status.

We the members/supporters/fans of the Victorian clubs are being taken for a ride by the AFL - our odds of winning a premiership are ar lot longer than those of the interstaters. Why?

How many home games of the interstate clubs are held away from their home ground? This is a huge advantage!

The DRAFT, THE SALARY CAP and the AFL OPERATIONS SYSTEMS stink of the rotting and decaying carcasses of the Victorian Clubs. (The very home of AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL)

All this in the name of marketing and expansion. How long do we have to suffer this inequity - we just seem to turn up each year with money in our pockets and give it to the clubs or the gatekeeper all this with hope in our hearts.

How to make it fair -

Scrap the NAB pre-season competition and get every team to play each other twice. Let the clubs who prosper - prosper and those that fall by the wayside fall - that way we would end up with a 12 team competition and a 22 round season again.

fair enough. my version of fixing tanking is better though :hihi

Scrap priority picks & consider the lottery system for the bottom 4 teams only.

Best solution would be to scrap priority picks and determine draft order after Rd 15 (assuming the AFL will fix the draw so that every team has played each once by that stage).

That still has its inequities - e.g.

During the first 15 rounds Collingwood plays the West Coast at Subiaco - Richmond plays the West Coast at the MCG. or vice cersa
Richmond plays Port at AAMI. Carlton plays Port at the MCG. or vice versa
Hawthorn plays Brisbane at the Gabba or Brisbane play Hawthorn in Tasmania.

These instances would make your solution unfair.

Scrap the NAB cup and play each team twice.......that is a 30 game season under the current 16 team competition and 34 games under the upcoming 18 team competition.......player lists would have to go 50 players.......TV contracts would have to be increased.....BUT AT THE VERY LEAST IT WOULD BE FAIR!

OR

Break it into two divisions of 9 teams each

Each division would play the teams in its division twice - that equals 16 games - the top four go into a the MAJOR SERIES which is where each team from the opposing division is played twice - that is 8 games - The scores of the games and the match points between the top four teams in each division are carried into the MAJOR SERIES - hence the final ladder will appear to show that each team in the MAJOR SERIES has played each other twice. The top 4 teams then go into a final series of First Semi Final - between 3rd and 4th where the loser is eliminated - second semi final between 1st and 2nd - winner straight into the Grand Final - loser plays winner of First Semi Final in a Preliminary Final where the loser is eliminated and the winner goes into the Grand Final against the winner of the Second Semi Final.

The remaining 5 teams from each division would go into a MINOR SERIES where they would play 4 teams from the other division twice and one team once - that is 9 games - then a final four system as per the major series would take place for the Top 4 teams in the MINOR SERIES.

Thus you would finish with two Premiers - a Major Series Premier and a Minor Series Premier. This would create an interest right through the season for supporters of those middle of the road clubs and lower down the ladder clubs whose season is usually finished by round 9 of the current system.

The Draft System could be worked on a lottery system for all those teams in the Minor Series.

Problem Solved -
