So with all this talk of tanking and priority picks its clear the draft system doesn't work. So I got thinking about how it could be done better.
One of the things I've also thought about is how the last place you want to finish is 9th. Finishing 9th sucks. As we all should know at punt road, finishing 9th puts you in a bugger all spot; you weren't good enough to make the finals and unless you get lucky, the 8th/9th/10th pick isn't as likely to help you make finals any time sooner.
So my idea to give teams on the bottom some reason to win is this:
So in essence the pick order for Round 1 would look something like this:
Round 1
-- Bottom 8, reverse order
Pick
#1 - 9th
#2 - 10th
#3 - 11th
#4 - 12th
#5 - 13th
#6 - 14th
#7 - 15th
#8 - 16th
-- Bottom 3 extra pick, normal order
#9 - 16th
#10 - 15th
#11 - 14th
-- Finalists remaining picks, normal order
#12 - 8th
#13 - 7th
..
#18 - 2nd
#19 - 1st
Teams that finished 9th/10th get a boost to their ranks which should help their push into the finals the following year. They just missed out because they were obviously missing that extra depth, and now they get a Deledio on the list.
Teams that finish bottom 3 no longer get rewarded for tanking, but they do get two 1st round picks to either pick up two decent young kids early or the option to trade away an extra early pick for a Nathan Brown :spin
Of course once Gold Coast, West Sydney, Tasmania? or whoever else come in the order changes and things might need to be adjusted slightly, such as the bottom 4 get an extra pick.

- Keep the current pick system, but reverse the order of the 1st round for the bottom 8 teams. Picks 1 to 8
- To compensate the teams that finish bottom 3, give them an extra early pick. Picks 9 to 11
- The teams that finished in the finals then get the remaining picks. Picks 12 to 19
- Round 2 then starts as it currently is with Picks 22+ going from bottom to top of ladder.
- Priority picks get abolished. There should be no incentives or rewards for teams that want to play bad and suck, if teams want to get better then they need to get their backside up the ladder towards 9th or into the finals.
