If our side had started 5-0 (4-1, 3-2) and then had still lost the past two games to go 5-2 (4-3, 3-3) would we have been any happier? I wouldn't.
Losses like those of the past two weeks show how far we are from winning/competing at the top level. There is no good in losing every match by a point and saying we were close. That is basically what happened with Frawley as coach in 2001, then he went for the 'top-up' approach in the draft, thinking we were closer than what we really were, and we continue to pay for it.
I am not happy about losing the way we have to Geelong and Port, but at least it has exposed some of the deficiencies that were not entirely obvious in the first five rounds.
While our results were 'competitive' in those first few outings we were never going to win any of those games when you look back on them. Our skills and execution were not up to scratch. Performances of the past two weeks just confirm it.
So now we have a truer idea of where the side is at and hopefully a better chance to recruit accordingly.
