I don't really follow the VFL that closely, other than my interest in Coburg.
I was wondering what would be Richmond's options for their reserves if they didn't have an allegiance with a VFL team.
What do the other clubs do if they aren't with a VFL team, or do all Vic clubs have a tie with them somehow?
(Please excuse my ignorance here
)
Damo would probably have more idea than me, but...
I think that the only Victorian team that doesn't have
a VFL affliate is Geelong - who run their own VFL team.
Last year, Carlton and Essendon ran their own VFL teams
as well, but this year, they have formed alliances.
I think it's like this: (off the top of my head)
Richmond/Coburg
Carlton/Preston
Essendon/Bendigo
Kangaroos/Port Melb.
Collingwood/Williamstown
StKilda/Springvale
Bulldogs/Werribee
Hawks/Boxhill
Melb/Sandringham
Geelong/Themselves
There aren't many more VFL teams left to form an
alliance with (Frankston, Tasmania, Nth Ballarat).
There is obviously a great cost in an AFL club also
running a VFL team - hence the large number of
affliations. These affiliations can (and do) change
last year it was the Kangaroos/Murray Kangaroos.
So, if Richmond wanted to be aligned with a VFL team
they'd have to negotiate with a club that has an existing
affiliation, or with (God forbid!) Frankston (which
I'd be spewing about!) or run their own VFL team.
I doubt that Richmond would like to again run a VFL
side, so I'm hoping for my own very selfish reasons
that they'll want to continue with Coburg.
