Here's another boredom breaker.
Over the last few weeks we've looked at the elements of successful sides. We've seen what they're composed of, and what is recruited as a consequence thereof.
So,
If we had to line up for a Grand Final today, how would we line up?
My intial offering would be a plan, then trying to fit players to it.
(This is the old tried and tested Sheedy method.)
B: Small Tough Back Pocket(180,85), Adaptable FB(190,95), Negating Tall Back Pocket(195,95)
HB: Rebounding tall-medium half back(188,90), Mobile CHB(192,95), Rebounding small-medium half back(184,86)
C: Tall marking winger(189,88), All-star Centre(184,86), Medium ball carrier(185,86)
HF: Rotating goalkicking RR(186, 87), All-star CHF(194, 95), Rotating Rr(178, 80)
F: Big Marking FP(196, 101), Mobile leading FF(190, 92), Little goalsneak(175, 78)
R: Mobile ruckman(198, 99), Hardnut RR(186, 88)
Rr: Speedy Rr(175, 78)
Int: Resting Ruck(205,105), Resting rebounding defender(186,88), Resting medium midfielder(186,88), Resting rover(178,80)
Note: These heights and weight are estimates only.
So who at Tigerland fits these roles, if we had to fill them today.
If I can't find the exact player I want, well, we've got to play a GF today, I have to use my next best available.
B: Hartigan(181,75, needs 10kg); Gaspar(193,90, not that adaptable and a tad light.); Hall(196,97, good fit.)
HB: J.Bowden(188,91,again a good fit); Jay Schulz(193,92,good fit, a bit more weight & experience); Newman(183,84, another good fit.)
C: Deledio(188,85,excellent fit when 5kg heavier); Coughlan(187,84,hardnut rather than an allstar, but OK); Hyde(184,81, today's best fit, needs another 5 kg.)
HF: Pettifer(184,84, not far off); Richardson(196,105, today we have to play him here); Brown would be here if fit, but we play today, so, Tambling(181,74,needs 5kg & experience)
F: Stafford(203,105, hope the hip holds up); P.Bowden(191,90, this is where we really lack); Krakouer(174,74,best we've got today.)
R: Simmonds(196,99, good fit); Tuck(188,89,great fit when more experienced)
Rr: Foley(177,78,best we've got)
Int: Knobel(202,102,good fit); Johnson(186,85,great fit); Tivendale(186,84, can kick a goal); Rodan's not available, so, Meyer(183,70,list is struggling now).
Of course this exercise doesn't take ability into account. (It's hard to quantify ability, unless you use stats.) But as you can see we did struggle trying to find speedsters, especially ones with goal kicking ability. And we struggled a bit in our key positions.
It's another exercise, and everyone has their own view.
Nice diversion over lunch.
What do you reckon?
