I'm nervous. We should do well this year, but...

I am nervous now - particularly about our depth - our number 1 side should be competitive with most in the competition - but injuries and suspensions throughout the year will find us out IMO. Our second tier players are not coming on as quickly as I had hoped.

Particularly when you compare us to a very much depleted Carlton side last night who went toe-to-toe with a depleted Geelong side and did OK until the last quarter.

Our second string side got a bath against the Saints at Shepparton - if we had of got within a couple of goals of them then I would say OK the coaching staff were trying a few things but the second tier guys are competitive - before you start saying it is only a practice match and it means nothing think about whether our one-on-one contests against the Saints were winners or losers - the score suggests we were the losers.

Alas I feel I may have been caught up in all the hype that is Richmond prior to the season commencing - every year I say I will not get caught by it - but I do - this year I am saying its because of Cousins Coghlan being in our side - add a hard nut like Thompson to in and under merchant Tuck and I think we have a chance in the guts - with Foley and Delidio flashing past for hand balls etc. etc.

Right now I feel Oh *smile*! I have been got again. *smile* I hope I am wrong and we do have succes this year - but right now I have a feeling in my water that we the supporters are being set up for another fall.

Sorry to all the brightsiders our there...........RT

I tend to agree with what you say, But i'm not going to read to much into it.
It is practice matches after all.
I'll wait for the real season to commence and let the players do the talking.

The expectations are high for the Richmond Football Club which is a worry. :nailbiting

I just hope that when I go to the games this season I don't leave feeling like i've been to a strip club.
...............Going there all excited but leaving frustrated and broke.

With the exception of Cousins we added depth, but not much extra in quality. Coughlan, Hislop, Thompson, Raines and Polo provide midfield/defensive depth. Vickery, Post, Nahas, Collins, Rance, et all are potentially the future.

You can argue marginal improvement from Tambling, Cotchin, Delidio, Edwards, Morton but equally you can discuss marginal decline from our unfortunately very important 30+ players like Bowden, Johnson and Simmons.

This is why we all should be nervous. Depending on how well we play, to what extent the injury demons gnaw on our players and depending on how much the general competition standard improves will decide where we place between 6th and 10th.

Going to be a nervy year and very good football watching year - as a middle of the pack team we have the players to be able to win or lose pretty much every week depending on how we front up mentally.

So for :nailbiting :pullhair I strongly advise :beer

;D

I personally think we may crack the 8 this year, bit if we don't many people here should be happy because that will spell the end of TW at Tigerland which is what many want and don't believe the side will succeed until this happens. The Saints game doesn't bother me. They're a bogy side for the Tigers, have been for years. Richmond took a second string side up to Shep and the Saints were at full strength. One thing that does hearten me is that there appears to be a confidence building among the players and it doesn't have the appearance of lip service as it so often does at this time of year.

I agree about TW - BUT - He is what he is - a middle of the road coach at a middle of the road club, lets not get too caught up with our own hype. Easy to get a worse coach - difficult to attract a better. Absolutely no point sacking someone without a plan, and with respect to the coaching position - its one that had better work.

Start the season well or finish the season well?

I think we will have a similar year to 2008.

The difference will be some close finishes hopefully going our way. (Bulldogs/Saints)

Cuzz will take a number of games to get match fit and gel, Cotchin is a vital key who won't play the first few rounds who in my eyes can make the world of difference.

With Richo playing the whole season on the wing (remember he didn't start their until about Round 5/6 last year), Simmonds with a full pre season and our 3 tall backs with a full preseason and a few extra kilos we should be optimistic.

Wallace is coaching for his football career, noone will want him if he gets the boot this year.
This pressure will bring out his best.

The preseason fixture is just that PRESEASON!

Effn EAT EM ALIVE!

is that what happens at a strip club? :duhman

I am excited and cant wait for round 1, but i have felt the same way every year for about the last 30. I just love the footy. This year I am a bit more optimistic than the last 20 though. I reckon theres a little window of opportunity for a smokey to snatch a flag. There are no real dynasty, power sides at the moment. Geelong are overrated and we showed how beatable the Hawks are late last year. Tambling will be a big improver this year, Deledio will win the Brownlow, Rance the rising star and JR will kick 50 and Cotchin to continue on his trajectory towards elite. Add these young'ns to some ageing champs like Richo, Cuz and Browny, a bit of luck with injury, a player to come out of nowhere (ala cyril rioli) and have an all-australian year, and we can easily win the 09 flag. GO TIGERS.
