Improving Draft picks & trades

Yeah, good point to you too 8ty...like ToO, can see where your coming from, and I'd be lying if it didn't excite me just a *little* having competition for spots and elite players... ;)

Man...all this stuff that goes on in a footy team...I'm so glad I'm not Terry Wallace or anyone else...I'd go nuts thinking about it all...better to sit here and make keyboard judgements...much less pressure! :help :spin :hihi

Edit: With all due respect Tango, that's not neccesarily true re: getting champion players only from low draft picks. Two points: In the last few years we've seen higher draftees surprise with their skills and become fixtures in teams...AND I don't believe we're far enough into this modern era to judge whether the most recent crops of low draft picks actually ARE going to be champion players. Sure, the signs may be good, but so many things can change. IMO its not about getting the low draft picks, its about being careful with the picks you've got and using those players to build your team. Low draft picks might help, but they aren't the be all and end all...

well sky go through the last 3 drafts and see what the first 5 players give you

just look at the last 2 years?

sure there are bargains later on, but the real champions go at 1 - 5

murphy, lids, griffin, tambling, roughead, franklin, cooney, thomas - just to name a few will all be very very good players

Fair enough Tango, and I don't disagree that in the last three years, there's been some gems in the early stages of the draft...but, someone else said on here (it may have been your good self...I can't remember...) that we shouldn't worship Raines on his good season this year, because he *may* be a one season wonder. Now, I'm not saying that these guys will end up as one season wonders...all evidence points to the contrary. But it *could* happen.

I'm merely saying that you can't put all your focus on obtaining low draft picks through whatever means necessary because they're more likely to net you a champion...you can't lose sight of the later picks. Claw made a good post about the talls on WCE's list and only a few came from early picks...and then there's Cox, who came from the rookie list. Yes, talls are different, admittedly. But to lose focus on the latter parts of the draft simply because its more likely that champions will come from here is folly.

Only time will tell if the top five picks in the last few drafts will become champions...but its dangerous to think that only top picks will net you champions.

have to agree with sky here.

None have backed their stellar years yet, big call to say they will be very very good players.

As much as low drafts have a better chance to yield good players, never should the lower picks be discounted.

Tuck, Hyde, Tivendale, Krakour, Coughlan, are all candidates IMO.
In Gaspar, Hartigan, Johnson, Kellaway, Knoble, Newman and Rodan.
Out Coughlan.
Newman??  A young guy with great work ethic, very good skills, pace & hitting the right age - yet you want to trade him?   ???
While I wouldn't be happy about it I'd trade Newman and a first rounder for d/p 1,2 or 3. :thumbsup

if you cant see that the players i have named will be very good players then you cant judge a footballer IMO

as far as the eagles go their 3 best midfielders went low, Judd went 3, Kerr went at 18 and cousins was father & son (kerr & cousins were taken a long time ago)

I can see that they could be amazing footballers but it is yet to be proven, there is no point saying they are until they prove it.

8ball.A question for you.
Lets say for arguments sake swap the senerio around.
Cogs was at North and they offered him & pick 9 for our pick 3.Would you take in knowing to well of Cog,s current circumstances?

Captain....its not that i think this will occur...it was simply onei threw out there...cogs i believe Cogs still has good currency on the market....The roos cant afford to be languishing on the bottom for too long and Coughlan and another midfielder at pick 8 would be a good coup for that club....still i doubt it would happen.

Insert the name Tuck perhaps

Can't see anyone trading for Newman or Coughlan, when the possibility exists that neither will play at a high level again. They would have to complete 2007 successfully, before anyone would look at either of them.

cant see anyone wanting Tuck either - slow, no skills and not a lot of footy smarts

he was detroyed by the eagles on saturday, one of the worst games i have seen him play

between he and *smile* they virtualy allowed their men to have free run at the ball and were not within 10 mtrs of them

They weren't the only ones Tango, I'm afraid.

Think you're a bit harsh on Tuck....he may not have silky skills, but he's not int he team to be flashy...he's there to get the hardball and get it out of the middle any way he can.
With Cogs out, and because of his stellar season last year, he's been tagged far more this season...something he hasn't been used to.

Look to an improved and smarter Tuck next season.

But Tivendale....... :-X :-X :-X

Intrestingly I read in todays Hun the Roos report, an it says how at pick 3 they will most likley get Hansen, now with all the talk of swapping this an that ,an how we need key position players ,realistickly what an who would we give up to get that pick of the roos or are we better of with what we will be able to get at pick 8,another weird senario that gets thrown around with the rule change to the draft is swapping of our first 2 picks for there first 1.I would doubt very much that anything would happen but just wondering what peoplesthoughts were as we hit the silly season :crazy

Can't really see any lower club trading off a first rounder, to much reputed talent in the early picks.
There is a strong possibility that a club flirting with the premiership clock would look at trading a high first pick for someone they might desperately need. The Bummers and maybe Blues would probably sell off their priority and maybe second rounders to get some quality experienced players as they desperately need to stabilise their lists for 07.
Can't see either Pagan or Sheedy surviving another year without sniffing around the fringe of the eight.
The one club that should be heavily involved in trading of players and or picks should be the Cats.
Regardless of Thompson staying or going the club desperately needs a major shakeup onfield. Far to many competent players living in the cosy feelgood Geelong cocoon. They need to get a mongrel in their to bastardise them a bit and give them a good hard look at themselves.
