A Port friend ( I know :vomit2 :hihi ) has asked if I have any info on our Draft Pick 103 in 1989. Brett Chalmers from Woodville S.A.

Does anyone know anything about his history, d.o.b. etc. I don't think he played a game for us and he's not listed in Tigers of Old. What became of him or didn't he ever come over?

Did not want to play with us so his lease expired I think then Collingwood drafted in 1991
pick 10 but did not play with Collingwood as was seen as breaking a draft rule. Was then picked up by Adelaide and then Port Adelaide I think.

Will look it up

In fact just did
Adelaide 94-97 50 games
Port Adelaide 98-99 25 Games

Thanks heaps for the info knighter.  :clap

The afl 2006 book the draft list has him from woodville and they were just trying to clear up that it was the same chalmers from port

no-one wanted to play for us back then....... :-\

When searching google, I found one interesting forum thread.

In which everyone was naming their worst ever Port Adelaide team.

In all the posters who posted, his name was always there at either FB or CHB.

1989 NOVEMBER DRAFT CHALMERS,Brett Richmond Selection #103 Woodville SANFL Cleave SA
Played 0 Games 193cm 82kg Didnt even come over to victoria as far as I can remember

1992 Nov Dr Coll Selection #10 then swapped to Ad Crows

He was tapped up by my former junior coach and Phys Ed teacher who became recruiting manager for Scumwood.
Hr refused to play for us although drafted by us.
They paid guys back then (Chalmers,Robert Pyman and Gary Shaw ect...duds the lot of 'em!) to refuse to sign for anyone but Stenchwood.

LMFAO they all fell on their swords and got nowhere.

He sent letters to several clubs (from memory Richmond, Melbourne, Fitzroy, St.Kilda?) prior to the 1993 draft saying that he would not play for those clubs if selected by them (I could be getting confused with Pyman, but I think both players did this).

Was listening to Sport 927 (may have been 3UZ back then) and the announcer said "Next race from Angle Park is Race 9, the Brett Chalmers Stake". Someone in the studio quipped "Brett Chalmers has just phoned through - he doesn't want Race 9, he wants Race 10".  :hihi

I was only chatting about this the other day.

Collingwood were very interested in Chalmers and Chalmers informed other clubs he was only prepared to play for Collingwood.

Richmond drafted him and Chalmers refused to play for us. Richmond attempted a trade with Collingwood, but they refused to swap a reasonable player.

As Chambers refused to play for us, he was delisted. Collingwood then drafted him up. The AFL investigated the matter and relisted him from Collingwood. The following year Adelaide picked him up. wasnt anything special got delisted from Adelaide then went to Port before being told he wasnt good enough.

Possibily justice in the end as he ended up being a dud.

Collingwood were found guilty of manipulating the draft are were also fined.

Incredibly naive comment about one of the great players the SANFL has ever produced. If he was picked up early enough and had enough motivation he would have dominated the VFL.

Remember this was a time when SA footy was going through great turmoil - he was expected to play with players who only weeks ago he hated and for a club that stated publicly their hatred for the club he loved - The PAFC.

Imagine if there was magically a new league created and Collingwood were admitted, they then decide to draft M.Richardson, would you expect him to perform to his peak?

He simply did not care about VFL/AFL football, add that to his injuries and its no wonder he was never at his best. You don’t kick 153 goals (+Magarey Medal) in the second best comp in the land if you aren’t a very good player.

You obviously know a hell of a lot about Richmond and its players. Stick to posting about that.

Well Digby, he happily took their money rather than quit and go back to his beloved PAP didn't he?
That would make him some kinda mercenary who lacked integrity wouldn't it?

You have said it therefore it must be true.

I agree. If he wasn’t motivated enough to be playing there he shouldnt have signed on. Doesn’t make him "overrated and over hyped" however.

I never said Scotty was some sort of moral highlander, merely a very very good footballer.

Obviously a fair few others thought he was a gun footballer otherwise he would not have received;

1990 Magarey Medal
